'La Manche'

Y'all...

La Manche is what the French call the stretch of water between us Brits and them. We call it the English Channel, as I live beside it I went to record the sounds last night, what I recorded inspired the passage which runs through the piece in 3 variations.

Hope you like it.

I can picture sitting at nite near Tha Channel, while the waves are crashing and listening to this tune. It projects this mood in a big way. Soothing, relaxing, and a feeling of belonging to something larger..... Nice composition Jon. I enyoyed it. No nits on the mix on my end.

Nice, that's a sampled guitar? Your technique is good, it sounds as it it were picked. It's interesting to hear that synth bass under the acoustic guitar. It feels like I hear "something" ahh that's it. It was like a cymbal being played very softly? And then the drums/percussion come in. Very relaxing, nice background music. About a billion times better than what I heard on Cakewalk's support line the other day... Don Q was from La Manche too :-)

Very nice smooth sound, Jon. I liked it a lot until the snare stick came in on the right at 2:06. I thought it was too hot and "too much." then the ride at 2:34 added a nice addition to the stick, but both of them were still too hot for the mix, IMO. I'd back them down a few dB.

one more thing. the ending was pretty abrupt. almost sounded like a Band in a Box ending. the ending didn't do the rest of the song justice, IMO.

love the arrangement, tho. nice work.

Thanks, not being much of a producer its the composition that is my favourite part of the process. I'm glad you liked it.

You are right on it, I changed the mastering suite in Reason which is controlling the rythms and didn't check the mix back in Sonar so the cymbals are overboosted 10k + far too much. Also the progressions were worked out in BIAB and I left the ending chord on, well spotted...and it shows you stayed with it until the end.

I shall have to do something about that now fer sure...

    Thanks for listening

Nice gentle pace in that intro. The syncopated chords are a nice contrast to the steady flow. Excellent piano tone in the faster section. Really liking those chord changes there too, interesting and unexpected in a good way. Cymbals and shaker are bright as already mentioned. Strings could come down a little in the end part to let that nicely done piano part shine through. Nice work.

    Nice work Jon.

Really smooth and warm. I kinda like the percussion.

    Its a nice melody too.

    Thanks Bill and Shad,

Taking into account all that's been mentioned here I've just updated it.

I have rushed this a bit because like Bill said about the chord changes, when I first heard how they worked so well together (IMO) I just had to get them down quickly. I wasn't even writing at the time I was tweaking the WAVs I'd recorded of the waves and playing some muzak out of BIAB to get a feel of what would work with them and the progression came out of that. Hence the original ending which I've now removed (lol..thanks Beagle...)

I'm off to look for those ocean sounds now I don't even know what I did with them since then. Ah well I can always toddle of down the beach and get some more...

    This is great!

28 years ago I was in those waters, on a ship of course. We came out of Plymouth on our way to the North Sea. I can't remember a thing about it other than the fact that I was there. Too long ago I guess.

What samples are these? They sound pretty good.

I would like to hear a little more of a drawn out ending, but that is just trivial.

    Very well done.

    Thanks Ron and GH

Ron if you'd have been having breakfast while passing through 'La Manche' you'd have missed it, its a very small stretch especially for the speed of a Navy vessel.

This one is solely arranged in Reason and just rendered in Sonar. The Piano is from the Reason Pianos sample refill which comes with 24and 16 bit versions. This is the 16 bit version (as it was destined for an .mp3). It's a Steinway K upright from that, that I've used in a 'Combinator' patch. There are mic options with each of the Piano's. Here I've combined the close mic'ed version with an ambient room mic. There is a secret ingredient here, which is no longer secret being as you've asked, in the same combinator I've put a Vibraphone from the Reason Factory Soundbank and mixed in a hint of that just to give it a light and spacey edge for this piece.

The Bass and Pads/Strings are using two of the Reason built in synths, Maelstrom and Thor respectively.

I know now where the ocean samples I took belong...to draw out the end where I surgically removed the BIAB ending...

I almost forgot the Guitar...It is the 'Intimate Steel String' again from the Factory Soundbank

    Thanks for listening.

From the pic at Soundclick I take that it's not so much the sand at Ramsgate but more the stones at Deal.

Anyway, it's full of athmossphere, I like it a lot.

A nice relaxing tune, it has a nice mix with all the details going on in the percussion and pads and layering.

    Jonbouy,

The mix sounds perfect on iMac speakers. Nice tune. I'm sitting near Block Island Sound in Rhode Island and the song fits perfect here as well. I've never seen La Manche, but from your composition, it must be beautiful.

Mr. Scott (as our Larry would say)...

I'm glad to hear that the vibe works at Block Island Sound as well, I think just being by the Ocean is a cool thing.

Mind you on another day when the wind is gusting 70 mph with driving rain I'm sure the tune would have more of a thrash metal feel...

Actually I dropped the 24bit piano samples in the latest version and I agree it sounds a lot nicer now.

    Thanks for the comment

Lots of velvety textures and intriguing chord changes.

The piano playing was well done.

I like the piano, too, but especially all the other cool stuff you have going on through-out--always something new coming along. Very well done. Great composition! I hate to nit-pik, but I thought the ending was a little abrupt too, and it sounds like you've already changed it. But leave it if you're happy with it. It's your song!

Strong composition. I like the clear tone of the piano, and the leisurely pace you begin with. Fortunately, about the time that pace had lost its luster, you open it up a bit at 2:10 or thereabouts and it gets more interesting. And, Beagle's opinion notwithstanding, I like the abrupt ending, the way it rings just a bit at the end.
