Lament for Love Lost
After the headbanging (!) of Gimme Gimme Yum Yum, I thought for the sake of sanity I needed to go back to my roots! And as 'Miriam' is taking a well deserved holiday (that is what she says!), this is a short instrumental with deep Celtic undertones. I know the solo violin (VSL) sounds rather harsh but I meant it to be that way in line with the title and sentiment of the piece. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11372318 Hope you enjoy it. Best Regards Malcolm

A very soothing piece of music, nice to wake up to. The melody is beautiful, and the subtle backing is just right. A masterful job.

Hi Lynn - A very Good Morning to you! Sincere thanks and so pleased you like it - hopefully this piece is a little more poetic that my last offering (you really can have too much Pie!).

I'm a fan of your music, and I love this in spite of the somewhat stale synth tone... lovely haunting melody... that said... I want more Pie...

Malcolm, This is very reminiscient of a Windham Hills CD I have. This is very soothing to an old fogy like me. This has great melodic structure, the violins are speaking, not just riffing. I like this a bunch. Very pretty.... I love pretty music. Inspiring actually. Some deep drum beats would be cool, just as accents. I could write some lyrics for this. Daryl

this is very nice, Malcolm! I really enjoyed this a lot. the melodies have different flavors, the violin and flute unison sounds almost "Native American" but not quite. love the harp on this. the flute by itself has a different flavor than the violin/flute combo. very lovely. nice work!

Hi Frank - Sincere thanks. I do agree with you about the synths - it is about time I did some updating - just hope my Bank Manager is in a good mood! As for "Pie", I am pondering some Becan Cake at the moment - perhaps I need to get headbanging again! Hi Rik - Sincere thanks - I did have to wait a bit for the brain to stop hurting from all that 'stompin pie' before I could get writing again! But I suspect I have not given up on Heavy Metal entirely yet! Hi Daryl - Sincere thanks - I haven't heard of Windham Hills before and after a quick Google search, I take your point - a lot of wonderful music I must explore. As for we old fogeys - we need all the soothing we can get! And as for lyrics - what a great idea - if you have any thoughts, I would love to hear them. Hi Beagle - Sincere thanks - I have always thought there is a close afinity between Celtic and Native American beliefs and equally their music. And I have had a number of Native Americans tell me they enjoy my music as I also enjoy theirs. I am currently waiting for a young Cherokee lady to send me her musical interpretation of four of my songs - will be fascinating to hear. Although I suspect she will not be so eager to cover my Pie song - I wonder if she likes Becan Cake?! Best Regards Malcolm

Splendid and masterful oriental piece, Malcolm! (Though you call it Celtic) For me this is godsend uplifting ... after much tragedy that my dear wife and I have endured over the years. Your lamentation makes me feel closer to God after losing love repeatedly and feeling the cost of my accumulated iniquities somewhat. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi Malcolm, Really like this piece, such a wistful, pretty tune. I wouldn't mind hearing the other instruments a little clearer, maybe back the violin off a dB or so? Lovely stuff.

Hi Malcolm, I really enjoyed this but did feel that the violin could have done with being just a little quieter (still harsh, but less dBs) to hear some of the subtleties of the backing. Of course I do understand why it's where it is in the mix, it's just a personal preference! Lovely lament though, definitely one I'll come back and listen to again. Cheers, Terry.

Hi Garry - Sincere thanks and so pleased you like it. Hi James - Sincere thanks. I very much take your point - you should have heard the VSL violin in my first mix attempt - would have definitely blown the cobwebs off the wall! So I did back it quite a bit, but I agree with you, not enough. VSL is quite a powerful VST and I never really get the balance right on the rare occasion I use it - I will try to do better!

Sorry Terry, I just had to make a rapid change from Firefox to Explorer so that I could use paragraphs in my response to Garry and James and I missed your post. Sincere thanks and so pleased you like it. As I said to James, you are right and I must try to work more with VSL instruments to learn to get that balance right. But all those adjustments available in VSL are very confusing to an old fogey like me!

Wow, I just listened to Larry's "Contemplating Mortality" and then brought this tune up next. What a mellow period of time while listening to these two songs. I think it is a beautiful piece and sounds great, Malcolmb. Oh, no, back to reality.

great tune Malcolm. just an idea, but maybe try alternating the violin with a flute, then bringing both in with harmony for a final chorus? is what i wrote about halfway through listening...lol! great minds! actually, i find one of the flutes in DimPro to be as good as anything (can't remember which one!)agree the violin is a little synthy at times but the strength of the tune pulls it thru.

Hi Mark - Sincere thanks. You are right and I did get a bit carried away with the violin dominating - need to give the flute a chance! Oddly, when I was writing this, I was tempted to use an erhu rather than the violin which would have worked equally well with tune and the flute - clearly I have been watching too many Chinese films (interesting that Philip in his comment picked up on an oriental feeling to the piece)! Imagine how this piece would have ended up if there was a good VST for bagpipes!
