Lament for the Whales - feat. Rikkie
Hi, I've not posted in a while - had time to lurk and listen in-between working and have added quite a few pieces by you talented folks to my regular listening. Anyway, here I am, back again and I'd like to share a mixed and mastered version of a track I had the good fortune of collaborating with Rikkie on a couple of years ago. It's called Lament for the Whales and I'd sincerely appreciate any and all feedback on the mix. https://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/lament-for-the-whales-2012 I had 2 versions of this track originally - a synth-heavy one that I did release on an earlier album, and then I uploaded an orchestral version just for the heck of it. Rik decided to improvise something on top of the orchestra and sent it to me... and that then inspired me to completely re-record the track and Rik kindly agreed to record guitar on it once again for me. Finally - two years later, I get round to mixing and mastering tracks for my next album and this one just has to be on it. Thanks Rik - this track has never been better than when it has your guitar in it! Cheers, Terry. PS: I promise to stop lurking so much and be more interactive!!!! Honest!

Seems I remember the original of this from a couple years ago, but this sounds really lovely and everything fits together like a tight glove. Rikkies playing the guitar works very well on this and everything sounds great. Good luck with the new album in April. Peace and Blessings, John

Thanks John, Phill, ad Wookiee - much appreciated. And Rikkie - without your guitar this track would be mundane. Thanks again. Cheers, Terry.

Lovely tune. At the beginning I'd mix the eng horn (oboe?) back a bit. It kind of overpowers when it 1st comes in. It's a beautiful, powerful tune. Peace, Ian

Nice tune. I love the sounds. IMHO.... the acoustic guitar is kinda buried in the other instruments throughout most of the song. Even where it's audible, such as at :40s -:57s and again at 2:07 - 2:37ish..... it should really stand to come up a bit to stand out as the solo instrument in those sections. Overall, nice tune and good job on it.

Thanks everyone - the track really wouldn't be what it is without Rik's guitar - and if you'd like to hear more of Rik's guitar on this he's brought it to the fore in a version he posted elsewhere in the Songs forum (my lawyers have been prepped now). Thanks for listening :-D Cheers, Terry.

Mix-wise the guitar does seem to be get buried here and there, but otherwise this is a really nice tune. Composition, performance, arrangement, overall mix - it's just really good. And it suits the title well!

Hi, The problem I had when mixing it was making sure the guitar was audible but not overpowering a whole orchestra!!!! I guess next time I'll know to turn the guitar up to 11 and turn the orchestra down to about 5 ;-) Cheers, Terry.

This is an excellent bit of tunage! My only crit would be the instrument after Rik plays his bit at first then that instrument comes in. It seems to loud to me. Great piece!!! Very well done!!!!

Very emotional music. The guitar was perfect for adding depth to the tune. It really builds around 3 min. Beautifully done by both of you.

good idea to re-do this one, it's worth it. i like the melodies.... they sound familiar, but then always change up just enough to go somewhere new. it's easy to fall into 'common' melodies with songs built with the kind of chord structure (up and down repeating motif) agree with ian about the horn solo at the beginning, it sounds great, but is rich enough in tone to NOT need to be as loud as it is. it can start very low, and build to the end of it's part. i dig the guitar mix, it only gets a bit buried in the last long section, but really, that's the way it would be with a real orchestra, eh? as much as i love the guitars, i'd leave the mix like it is there. maybe crank the guitar for the very last line.....

This is truly wonderful:) The professional guitar part is overshadowed a bit at times, but that climax and the transition back to the choir and guitar is heavenly.

If there was a remake of Moby Dick perhaps they could use this, it certainly has that cinematic epicness/epicality (my spell checker's having a breakdown). I would certainly like to hear this played by a full symphony orchestra. You have created a great collaboration here.
