Laptop recommendation for new set up....

I am just waiting for my divorce settlement to come through and then I am going to buy myself some new toys. Some of which are going to be Sonar Producer X1 + Steven Slate Drums. I will probably also buy some new speaker monitors.

If I am going to set that up, I think I should also by a new laptop that is 100% dedicated as a DAW. I am after some recommendations. I can obviously read the system requirements but my current laptop meets those requirements and I constantly get drop outs and reasonably high latency and can only record on the "relaxed normal" latency setting for my Audiobox USB interface. What do I need? What are the "must haves"?

Fast processor?
Mega RAM?

Any others?

Thanks

Glenn

You interface is most likely the culprit for your problems more so.

I would hold off on a laptop and look at a new interface-

I recommend looking at the Roland quad or octa capture or the RME usb options-

The Roland is really cost effective and great low latency performance and smooth operation-

The Presonus unit you have can be decent at higher latency settings, but I bet the roland performs much better-

If... you are setting up a new rig..... why not a desk top dedicated DAW?

Its an easy build, or buy a box at the computer stores... some will custom build, or Jim Rosenbury  will build one for you that will be a screaming fast DAW.....

I'd look in that direction since lappys are OK but tend to be loaded with crapware.

And the interface upgrade... I totally agree that you should do that first IF the lappy you now use is speced to the DAW requirements and you're having drops. that is usually the symptom of a soundcard that can't hang with the big boys....

    Just my 2 cents.

I am getting a quote to build the lappy from the ground up so with no crapware and add on bits & pieces. The attraction for me with the laptop is that I can take it with me to record my singers vox etc..

Again, your interface is probably the cullprit. You actually have a decent system.
