Large man successfully argues that 'bubble & squeak' counts towards your five-a-day

Especially if eaten with baked beans.

Sprouts, carrots, parsnips, spuds, onion = full quota of five-veggies-per-day

And sage and onion stuffing must surely count as another two

A rough calcumalation shows that's a total of 8 all told!

By my logic, the more of it I eat, the healthier I shall become.

My healthy 8-a-day diet is working wonders...

I just 'lost' a hell of a lot more weight than I ingested at tea time.

I am going to have to start on the same diet approach that you are currently going through, as I am now beyond big.

Mine begins 12/31 - breakfast.  NO milkshake, NO hash browns, NO flavor, NO happiness.

Here is an NBA player's hack for helping to burn extra calories.  Water conducts heat away from the human body 25 times faster than air at the same temperature.  Because of this, getting into a cool (NOT cold) shower for 10-15 minutes, or better yet into a swimming pool - does not have to be cold, your body will burn all kinds of calories generating heat to keep the core warm.  The cool water gets the body to jack up the metabolic rate way high, to keep warm.  The EXTRA cool thing about this is that once the body gets into this mode of raised metabolic rate - it will continue to operate like that for 45 minutes to an hour, so even after you come out of the shower or pool after only 10-15 minutes, your body will be flying through burning extra calories for close to an hour.

The above is used by pro athletes all over, to keep excess pounds quickly off - and they are legitimate pounds - not those cheesy dehydration pounds that come right back when you get a drink of water.

I will be doing the above as well, also beginning on 12/31.  I literally have 60 pounds to lose.

By a similar token, drinking cold water right out of the fridge is better than room temperature water since the body has to heat it up to body temperature and that uses up calories.

Yup - good point.  That does depend on the goal, however.  What I mean is that for burning those extra calories, you are quite correct.  On the other hand, when I used to train as a professional athlete and drank water to hydrate, I always drank room temperature water because my body absorbed it faster and that hydrated me quicker and better.

Since I am no longer moving from my couch/chair, I will switch over to cold water, per your advice.  :)

Muscle burn calories - though nothing dramatic. But it all adds up. And the time and effort you spend building an re-enforcing muscle can burn important amounts.

After I turned 40, I did notice that it takes a whole lot more effort to get rid of fat.

I'm eating well (extremely well, actually), and training an hour a day, 5 days a week. But I've reached a point where taking more pounds off is very hard, no matter how hard I work out.

Sometimes it's a bit disheartening to see that for all the efforts, there's so very little results. Especially when you're surrounded by performers who all seem to be chiseled like Bruce Lee.

But I think you've got to take it the other way - maybe you're not seeing the fat going away as much as you'd like, but what you are also not seeing is more fat piling up and how potentially bigger you'd be if you weren't sweating an hour a day in the gym.
