Last Day Of School - Movie Theme Song

Hey Everyone,

This is a very different track for me... I was hired to do an early 2000s style pop-punk party song for this movie Last Day Of School (which will be coming out next year). Any of you who have listened to my music know I usually do instrumental, dark, ambient/electronica type stuff... but I thought this would be a fun challenge. So enjoy this and let me know what you think :-)

As a theme song this really works. The guitar sound was not perhaps my favorite but otherwise a great theme song.

Thanks kakku! Yea I'm not much of a guitarist, but I just threw some GuitarRig on there until it sounded like New Found Glory or Good Charlotte and played some power chords :-) haha

Haha, man you definitely captured that early 2000's pop punk! Reminds me of my teen years watching Blink 182, New Found Glory, Alkaline Trio, Good Charlotte etc. on MTV2! Not listened to that genre in yonks!!

As I was listening, I can just imagine that being played over the closing credits of an American Pie-esque film. You've definitely achieved the goal on this one.

The reverb/delay on the snare panned right became a bit tiring after a while though, would maybe bring it down a notch. Other than that, definitely took me back 10/15 years! Good job

I think you pretty much nailed it. Straight up, in your face raw rock. Really like the descending lines that drive the hook. The only thing that threw me off a bit was the intro (stops/cuts/power chords) - somehow I couldn't lock into the timing as easily as I expected to - it's probably me. Perfect for a party movie!

Fun song,  Could definitely hear this as a movie theme.    Is this the final version or will it be re-cut for the movie soundtrack?    I might add some more guitar layers if this is your final version.   A lot of this style of music as a fairly clean guitar doubling the rhythm guitar distorted part to bring some more dimension and punch to the delivery.  If you captured a raw rhythm guitar track you could just re-amp another guitar part with that same performance.

    Good stuff.

Thank you guys :-) Really appreciate the comments. The movie is supposed to actually be distributed next year and it's pretty ridiculous and wild... Even has a cameo by Lloyd Kaufman from Troma Films (who distributed their last film), so I'll definitely post a link once it's out.

As for the comments, it is basically a done deal for now (this plus an instrumental version will be used in the film), but definitely a lot of great feedback. I considered adding some more layers of guitar and panning them out with a little different sound on them, but I kind of had it to the point where I was happy with it and it was at deadline so I called it a day. If they decide they want any kind of changes though after the fact, maybe i'll go back in and play with that and/or that snare drum.

Fun stuff....I'd really like to hear what it would sound like w/out the vox doubled on the verses...it seems like it might sound a bit more personal and give the chorus a boost when you do double that up....

    just thinking outloud here...

Thanks! Yea the double tracked vocals throughout just kind of go with that sound from the early 2000s which is why I left it all the way through. If I wasn't going for such a specific thing I probably would have done what you said :-)

Pretty cool tune.... That lead guitar rips right through the mix.  Not sure if that's a bad thing or not ... (It works). I think the double tracking of the vocals does get that sound you were shooting for but perhaps using it a bit more judiciously would have resulted in a much better result? The guitar tone is unique though and kind of puts your signature on the song.

Haha yea lyrics too. I used to do a lot of comedy-rap stuff (still do, but I just don't talk about it much as not to take away from my "serious" music haha), so writing lyrics is something i've done for a while. Still not my main focus though.

    Haha, perfect :-)

And I wouldn't say I hated it, it did its job... which was background music for being drunk at parties trying to meet girls... But I don't think I'll be making a playlist of New Found Glory and Good Charlotte songs anytime soon haha.

Nice one, David.  I didn't see that one coming.  You did a good job of capturing a vibe that's actually been around longer than most people know.  I hope I get a chance to see the movie.  Have a good year!

Thank you! Really appreciate these comments everyone. It's kind of making me want to finally finish this funny little guitar based album I've had planned for years and just never get around to. Maybe it's time to get that thing done... I need an excuse to play my guitar more anyway haha.
