Lately (edited as per bapu's suggestions)

Made this drum beat with Fruity Loops.  I exported each individual drum out of FL, which allowed me to put each drum on its own individual track.  Then Mikey (songwriter) played the acoustic guitar.  I then went in and laid the bass line.  Then Randi did the main vocals, followed by backup harmonies by Mikey.  Then Jason came over and laid down that crunchy electric rhythm guitar, followed by Mikey finishing it off with the guitar solo.  Then of course, I mixed it all down and mastered it.  Mastering is still very new to me and there is a ton that I still have to learn.  If anyone can give me any pointers or critique at all, I am listening.

EDIT:  Here it is with the vocal compression removed and hopefully the last of the pumping I kept getting in the master.  Thanks bapu!

Thanks,

    Where to begin?

As a grove it's nice. The lack of any real chord changes in the song (to create parts) is what jumped out at me first.

The drums sound good but the kick is lacking in definition. Maybe some EQ on the kick to give it more beater sound.

The bass guitar is a bit too muddy/boomy for my taste. Try a high pass filter at 80Hz on the bass track..

The vocals are not up front. And they are not a consistent level. They seem to be pumping up and down in level. It almost sounds like a ducking compression technique is taking place. It's disturbing to me (and not in a good way).

I'm not sure your problems are the mastering as such but may be in the original track recordings.

    HTH.

    Hey bapu,

Thanks for listening.  I re-listened with your crits in mind and I think you may be onto something with the vocals.  I originally thought the pumping had been occurring within the electric rhythm guitar track.  I'm going to go back into the mix and remove some compression on the lead vocal track and see if that helps.

Everything else that you mentioned, (muddy bass, not much in the way of changes, kick drum) was actually intended as you described, based on the input from everyone involved on the project.  I checked out some of the stuff on your website (some very cool songs, btw) and I think we simply have some different tastes/preferences on tone.

Thanks again for the vocal tip.  I'm gonna go hit up that mix right now and see what I can come up with.

    Thanks,
    Reid
