Latency Issues

Hey everyone, yet another question!

Ever since I upgraded my computer I've been running Sonar with a ASIO Latency of around 2.7ms. Sonar was reporting a total round trip of around 5.6ms I believe. Yesterday for some unknown reason I started getting pops and clicks and when I went to the audio settings Sonar was now reporting round trip latency of 30ms plus! The funny thing is that I didn't change any settings and now I cannot get my interface to playback at any latency below 5.3 on the slider, 40 ms round trip. Any Ideas? I'm running Sonar 8.5.3 and using a Tascam US-1641 with 2.01 drivers, I tried the newest drivers 2.02 with no luck. I've tried it in WDM mode and it's even worse. I tried using ASIO4ALL just to see, and still the same issue. Why would my latency change so much for no apparent reason?

Is it a particular effect and/or synth you have in that project that is the cause? in particular are you using a convolution reverb?

No it doesn't matter what project is open, they've all been affected.

What audio device drivers do you have enabled in Sonar's Audio Options?

FYI, the slider doesn't work in ASIO driver mode...
    Make sure you installed  ASIO4all...
Click the ASIO panel in options > audio to go to your sound cards control panel and there is where you change your asio buffers.

If all else fails, change to WDM driver mode and re[profile your sound card and then change to ASIO driver mode and then click  the ASIO tab and lower your buffers to 64 or 92...

I have a Tascam us 1641. I started a thread and ask if anyone had better results than I , As far as I know Sonar's reported latency it not RTL.  It's "effective Latency which is different. I see you are using XP, Switch back to the original drivers 1.0, Version 2 is for Vista and W7, they don't tell you this. When I tried the new drivers Sonar would freeze up. So I e mailed Tascam and they advised me to stay with the drivers from the cd for XP.

See my thread on all this for further pondering. This link might not work so it's under "Hardware"  titled " Tascam us1641 users read this"

I had the same issue, and i switched my buffer from 128 to 256 and restarted everything and it seemed to work fine, I am not sure if buffer has anything to do with it but it seemed to help me out.

Yea, the lower your ASIO buffer, not the I/O playback/recprding buffe4rs are, the less latency you will have. Same goes for your WDM slider, the further it is to the left, the more latency you will have.

If sonar is reporting 5ms input latency and a roundtrip of 11ms and under, you shoudl have no latency issues at all, unless your using one of the plugins with hidden buffers, like themastering ones and perfect space

Hey guys sorry, but I am using Windows 7 64-bit. Now that the holidays are over, more time to troubleshoot!  CJ, I tried re-profiling with WDM then switching back to ASIO I still have monster latency, Sonar reports with my buffers on low (I think this is around 128 samples):
    input - 4.4ms
    Output -  17.3ms
    Round-trip - 21.8ms

On this exact same setting before, It was under 6ms round-trip. What is going on?

That's more or less what you would expect, there is nothing out of the ordinary with your readings. Read my thread and you will see I had very similar figures.
I would be happy to know that someone achieved 6 ms RTL but so far I have not heard back from anyone who has. Are you using the Centrance utility?

Anyone have anymore ideas? I used to be able to us my v-drums and run a drum synth with them no problem. Now my latency is so high the delay makes it impossible to play them live. Why would my system just all of a sudden do this?
