Latency - even now....

Hi guys. Can't believe I'm having a latency issue. But I am. I really didn't think I would, given that I've upgraded my set up considerably. But I'm wondering if it's a setting somewhere which needs tweaking. Basically, My first real project in Sonar X2 is taking shape - all going fine but then suddenly, without warning, there's a slight latency happening. There are no glitches or drop outs happening. Soundcard Info: 44100/384 samples (has worked fine until now) Project has 7 synths in the rack. It's been so long since I dealt with latency - I can't remember what other settings you'd need to know...please ask. Any ideas? It's not a huge latency - just enough to throw me off the flow. But I never experienced latency on my old, slower set up even with more synths in the project and the same sample rate on the soundcard. Cheers Dave

p.s - If I start a 'new project' with a blank canvas, the latency problem disappears.

Potentially one of the plugins you have is using either look-ahead processing or is otherwise CPU intensive.

You can try hitting 'E' on your keyboard to disable that project's plugins to see if that works, then if so you can look at which one or ones are causing this to happen.

Please list the plugins this project is using.

    I'm with Bob here.

If pressing "E" clears it, then look for any effects that are cpu intensive, or use look-ahead, and turn them off until you finish tracking.

In Sonar typical culprits are: Perfect Space, LP-64 Multiband, LP-64 EQ, TS-64, PC Concrete Limiter, Boost 11.

There are others, but these are the ones I seem to see mentioned on here.

Hitting 'E' Makes the problem disappear. DOH! I think I see the problem. I put LP-64 Multiband followed by Boost 11 on the Master - and then continued to play around with the track - with the whole signal going through them. When I disable them, the problem disappears. HOWEVER - I thought my new machine would be capable of handling that kind of punishment? ASIO drivers, up-to-date drivers installed from M-Audio website. My project is a lot smaller than most projects I had on my older set up on Home Studio 7XL - with less tracks and less processing. Didn't have latency problem before...

If a plug in uses look ahead, it doesn't matter how powerful the computer is, unless it is capable of time travel.

A look ahead effect, like Boost 11, has to know what it is going to be processing, before it has to process it (e.g. to limit any input  that crosses the threshold).   So Sonar has to delay output whilst it "looks ahead" and then processes it.

Glad you ot it sorted, BTW.

Even my 'Yay' was useful?  (posted it to boost thread count.  Have to catch Bapu)

This forum is full of helpful folks.  I have learned countless things from reading through threads, and do my best go give back for precisely that reason.

    Good luck with it all,

Make sure you only have the M-Audio device selected in Preferences-Audio. Deselect the computer soundcard if that is selected. You should be able to run that M-Audio card easily at 256 samples with that computer.

    No, not yet.

It's become fairly automatic for me to hit 'E' if during a session I want to record additional material (this is fairly typical for the way I work) then re-enable all Fx once I've finished recording

You could also swap out the performance killing plugins during tracking with less resource-demanding ones, then for post-tracking use the ones meant for use post-tracking.

That way, you can still have effects in place during tracking, rather than just bypassing them all.

you might also consider upgrading to win 8. it seems to handle resources better than 7, and the upgrade is easy.
