Latency in Sonar with EMU 1820m
I'm having a real hard time getting an acceptable latency with Sonar. I've tried WM/KS, WAMASPI, and MME, but it's super laggy. Moreover, it's laggier than it should be for the given size. For example, with WAMASPI, I put it at 10ms, and it sounds laggy, if I put it an 10ms in FL Studio (with ASIO drivers) it sounds great. I've tried using ASIO drivers in Sonar, but no sound. Anyone have any ideas? (note yes I've installed the latest drivers, lol).

download asio4all..it will solve your problem tonight..unless you have asio drivers on your interface software you wont be happening...asio is always an option in the menu..i dont even have asio drivers but for some reason they show up on the preference menu..download that driver..the english version...read the 5 page manual and set it up..youll be latency free....latency is evil and must be delt with by beating it with a stick...unfortunettly this distorts my equipment so i cant...how bout some more info on your junk..(sorry no offence..thats what i call my equipment, windows 7 32,64????the interface???

matt...download the driver from asio4all install it,go to your preference menu and choose asio under drivers..close sonar..open sonar go to menu again click asio on the drivers tab to open the control panel, deactivate your systems soundcard in here only...activate the asio driver in here only by clicking the wrench which open up tools..play around with it...you got nothing to lose..if it dont work..simply uninstall it..its only 470kb for memory...but im willing to bet..90 percent youll have no latency if you set it up right

Absolutely do not attempt to run the E-MU with Asio4All. It will interfere with the native ASIO drivers. If Asio4All is even present on your system, it will render the E-MU useless until you remove it. Been there, done that. What OS are yoy running? The 2.1 version of drivers and Patchmix is the most current, but it indicates Vista and XP (no W7 yet). Do you have all of the E-MU I/O selected in Options>Audio>Drivers? Is the E-MU your Playback Timing Master?

Positive. Asio4All is good for what it is, a wrapper for WDM, for cards that do not have native ASIO drivers. But if the sound card has its own native ASIO drivers(which the E-MU does), this results in a conflict that basically destroys communication between the software and hardware. However, I do highly recommend Asio4All for sound cards that do not have their own ASIO drivers. It made a world of difference when I was starting out with my old soundblaster card. I tried something with it a while back, and had to uninstall it to regain control of my E-MU.

With respect, you need to look elsewhere in the chain if you are using Emu current drivers. I can get 64 samples with my 1212m with no issues. Well apart from OTHER ssues I have with Sonar, but that is another story. Certainly with your system set up correctly, there is no reason why the current Emu drivers will not perform fine. FYI I am running my 1212m on a dual core AMD machine under win7 currently, but previously it ran just fine under XP64bit. Interestingly, my dual core/2GB/Emu1212m is far more stable and reliable than my 6 core machine with 8gb of ram and the highly-rated rme HDSP96.52 interface! Go figure.

No problems here with E-MU 1820 and ASIO drivers (PE 6). I settle with moderate 6-7 ms setting in ASIO panel and everything's smooth.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

My 1820 has settled down, also. Only problem now is that the I/Os are random. I have to try several to find a hot one. One session, In 1L might be ASIO 3L, next time ASIO 11L! At least the dam' thing is running...

I am running the beta driver version for windows 7 on the EMU. I couldn't even get stable audio with the 2.1 drivers. (BTW, EMU sucks for not having full win 7 drivers by now). Under the driver tab I have EMU selected. And under the general tab I have EMU selected as my timing and playback master. I tried selecting ASIO, and closing and re-opening the program, but still no sound under asio. I've got latency set at 10MS under the ASIO panel. Is there any setting in the patch mix DSP that could effect this? Then again it works fine in FL Studio.

tried installing ASIO 4 all, that at least gave me sound under ASIO, but it's not stable, and has continued distortion. Even at 1024 samples hmm, and now I have distortion, on all settings, maybe something else is wrong (sigh). I'm going to try a restart.

Well the restart fixed the distortion in the other driver modes at least. I really want this to work, and don't want to get a new audio interface. I can think of other things I would rather spend $1000 on.

did you go into the asio4all panel and turn off your other soundcard? thats probably where the distortion is comming from..robert said he didnt think this was a good idea to use asio4all..my guitarist uses it with greaT RESULTS on windows 7..hopefully he wiil be back to give you some insight ..my opinion is when your exahsting all other options you gotta reach..play with the settings in asio4all it will work

I don't understand what you mean by turn off your other sound card. If I go into the ASIO panel and turn off the EMU from in there, I don't get any sound. And I don't have any other sound cards. Also at Ivan, well then maybe thinking about getting an RME interface won't help, lol.

im talking about the asio4all panel..if you have an onboard soundcard thats you other soundcardand in the asio4all panel it will show up,you must disable that card or it will conflict with the asio4all..are we on the same page..are you using asio4all or your emu's card?

I uninstalled ASIO4all because it only gave me 2 I/Os Like I said, with mine I set up a strip for In 1L in the DSP, then have to go try drivers in Sonar to find which one corresponds to that today. It's a PITA. And yeah, those Beta drivers came out last June. Get off the dime already!

Oh well, I well just work in higher WDM latency for now I suppose, and do keyboard practice in FL Studio. Not like my chops are that good anyway, but it just makes it harder to practice with high latency.

I have an 1820 m working under Windows 7, with ASIO. It was a bit fiddley to get setup, but it's working, pretty much. Patchmix is a pain in the butt, but very flexible. I'm sorry if you have done these steps, but just want to check. 1) Do you either have or created an strip for ASIO? Mine is named ASIO 31/32. I think it was setup this way. 2) Then make sure in the Audio tabs that EMU ASIO is selected 3) Finally, as part of PatchMix (sorry, not in front of me right now), is a virtual 'patch-bay' You have to take the output from the strip and assign it to the output you want to get the audio out of. For example, if I want the headphone output, then I had to assign it to the headphone output from the main mix. You will have to do the same with whatever outputs you want to use. However, the same issue that I have as you in regards to trying to get a low latency....Mine is setup to about 10ms, and it's not laggy, but for some reason I can't set it too much lower, then I get motarboating and dropout....and I don't get why that is...I've seen some folks report they can get 2.5 ms....but that was probably the XP drivers. Hope this helps. I can also look at my exact setup at home and let you know exactly what the setup is.

So I need to go into the EMU PatchMix to get things working (IE outside of Sonar). I certainly haven't tried that (not even sure exactly how). I've just been selecting ASIO from the Sonar audio menu.

Ok, that got it working, thanks !!! Although, it's funny it still sounds a bit laggier at 2ms in Sonar, than the 10ms in FL Studio. but that could be my imagination. I will ask my wife when she gets home (she's the proffessional piano player). Thanks again,

Are you still using the ASIO4All driver or the E-MU ASIO driver? It's possible you are using a softsynth/ effect with some kind of latency compensation turned on. Most mortals cannot detect latency less than 10-20ms. I've been watching this thread, but not added anything because I am using XP, and question the relevance of my experience as it related to W7. It was looking like it was more of an issue with getting Patchmix set up correctly, so I'm glad you got that worked out. It's a tricky bugger, but incredibly flexible once you figure it out.

I have it set at 2ms both in Sonar, and FL Studio, and there is a noticeable difference between Sonar and FL Studio. Still, it's better than what it was, so that's something.
