Latency issue with Sonar Platinum and Scarlett
I am using Platinum with Scarlett 2i2. When I record vocals, I don't hear my own voice in the headphones. So I turn on the input echo on the vocal track. I can now hear but there is a significant lag which is distracting enough while recording so I have to turn off the input echo. The latency is showing 10m/sec with buffer size 2 in the driver preferences. The scarlett has got direct input monitoring but I can hear my voice clearly on the headphone only if I turn the mic gain knob to the max on the device. This obviously causes the recorded signal to go too high in Sonar. Any hints on how I can resolve this ? Is the driver or interface or the cable (which is 5 meters long).

Try to put Volume to max on the MixControl for the line of your Mic, and with de MixControl Too turn down the Volume of the output of the DAW & Not turn on the input echo in the DAW.

you have the Mix control software installed ? you have the Scarlett selected in your devices and running in ASIO driver mode ? try using a lower buffer size like 4.0 I have an 18I8 and I use input echo all the time. I go in to my Mix control software and set it up for "Daw tracking". this works perfect.

You might want to confirm what driver you are using. I would recommend the 2.5.2 driver.

First, Is the music playback ( computer) loud in the headphone when the headphone control is at say 1 o'clock? What signal are you getting from the mike? ,, does it go into the red if you shout out? If the music playback is loud and the mike is not, then there's something wrong with your mike set up, cable or the setting your using..also is this a phantom powered mike? USB power is a known factor with pour performance with phantom powered mikes.. You need an interface with a power supply. The 2i2 is certainly a pour design for interfaces from all the weirdness reported here due to it's lack of certain features.

Does the lag go away if you toggle on/off the Bypass All Effects by hitting the letter 'E' on your computer keyboard? IF so, then one or more of your plugins loaded in the project is spiking your latency. Generally, plugins that cause this are ones that use things like Look-Ahead processing, or otherwise chew up a bunch of CPU. (Convoluted Reverbs, Linear Phase plugins, Boost11, Breverb2). Anyways, some of the more robust effects plugins are really not meant to be used during the recording/tracking phase of a project - they are meant to be used in the mixing phase. This is because they need a big ASIO buffer to give them the room they need to do what they do. So, during recording - a smaller ASIO Buffer Size (I use 128 as a balance - some folks use 64 or lower, depending on their hardware), while during recording - a much larger ASIO Buffer Size (1024 or 2048) works well for lots of folks. So, if you are seeing the lag come and go as you are toggling the effects on or bypassed, then go through the plugins loaded into that particular project, and make sure they aren't spiking your latency. If so, consider swapping out the ones adding too much latency, for simpler/leaner plugins - and then swap those others back in once you move on to mixing and have your ASIO Buffer Size cranked up. If you have a WiFi adapter on your computer, these can also cause big DPC Latency spikes, and if so (running LatencyMon) can help ferret that out - and for folks with WiFi issues when running streaming audio applications such as Sonar, many of those folks will temporarily turn off or disable their WiFi and then launch Sonar and do their thing, and enable the WiFi again after finishing their Sonar session. I hope the above helps, Bob Bone

The lag does not go away if I toggle the effects. Another thing to note is that I don't see ASIO driver in the preferences. I am using the Scarlett driver. I was using ASIO4ALL some time back but it had other issues so I had to stop using that one. Im using a AT2020 mic and the signal is quite decent. I have tried to resolve the issue setting the mic gain at various levels. When I turn the input echo, there is a very significant lag that distracts the singer. The direct monitor on the Scarlett allows the singer to hear his voice but I have to pump up the mic gain to full strength to be able to hear through the direct monitor, else it feeble. And obviously doing this turns the red ring to go on and the signal clips in Sonar. This is the first generation Scarlett. The driver site shows the driver is dated 2014.

Btw, I have WIFI, I have not tried turning it off......will try that as well, though I don't think that could be an issue coz there have been times when the WIFI was down and that did not make any difference.

Not sure if this will make a difference, but Focusrite does have a public beta site: http://beta.focusrite.com/. I have been using the 3.2.2 driver with my 2i2. The big change is that "standard" buffer sizes are now used (powers of 2). This have been available for over a year. Not sure why it is not official. I have been using this driver for close to a year and have experienced no issues.

My next interface will not be a Focusrite. And the pre amps and the way the gain is sort of funky is my biggest gripe. I had to buy a Joe Meek pre amp to solve my issue with the gain. It was either too quiet or too loud and clipping. Sounds like your experiencing the same issue.

Just a couple of things I noted. Have you removed the asio4all driver from your computer? I found I actually had to delete it altogether to make the focusrite driver behave itself when I first bought my first 2i2. A number of people have had similar, and bizarre, happenings with it left on the PC. I had a 2i2 before my current 18i20, (which I love BTW). Also, are you pushing the monitor level right up to get high volume ? Direct all your mix to a single bus in order to turn it down, so you can crank up your monitor volume, and your input gain to the max before clipping. The only other thing I thought of was your headphones. There are headphones out there that require a decent pre-amp, and the 2i2 does not have a very high output, but I doubt that's your issue.

Kind of late to respond back on this thread. I did try the beta drivers, and it started giving constant clicks while playing any audio on the PC, not just from Sonar. I reverted back to 2.5.2 and still living with the lag while recording vocals. I'm preparing to get the RME UCX but wanted to make sure I tried all possible tricks to get this one working, but no luck so far ! I really dont know what the direct monitoring won't work unless I turn the mic gain too high ! Just too low gain on the mic inputs I guess ! ? This is scarlett 2i2 first gen btw.

I use that card (1st gen) as well. No issues with latency when recording: - make sure you use the Focurite ASIO driver. I can record easily with latency below 10ms at 16/44.1K
- use the direct monitoring on the interface. This allow you to hear what you record before it even hit the DAW. However that is a dry signal
- I always disable the Wi-Fi in Device Manager when I use Sonar ...

I think the OP's issue is if he turns the mike gain up so He can hear in the phones, the pre amp goes red and clips. This is my experience too. I have found the workaround was to use a small mixer to drive my headphones from the 3/4 output on the 6i6. My mike is split from the extra output on the back of the Joe Meek pre amp so problem solved. Certain headphones have more output than others so using a set of loud phones might also solve the issue.

When I had a Gen 1 version of the Scarletts I found I had great success using a small mixer (I have a $125 Yamaha mixer that includes effects like reverb) and a microphone splitter. I could record with absolutely zero latency and add reverb to suit the ears while recording actual dry tracks. I recently posted this on a related topic. This technique might help the OP as another approach to consider (via Device Manager). http://forum.cakewalk.com...-Hazards-m3535408.aspx

Yes, all set to go for the UCX , not just for the latency issue but also need more I/O. Just wanted to give one last best shot at the scarlett. Thanks to others who suggested the mixer technique. I will try that one as well !

So can I continue to connect my mic to the scarlett and just connect the headphone out to a mixer and be able to solve the issue ? The point is I don't want to connect my mic to the mixer coz the mixer preamps are not as good as the scarlett. Would this be equivalent to connecting the headphone out from the scarlett to an headphone amp?

RishiS - for the recording you've been mentioning, the technique of the mixer addition allows you to stop using input monitor from Sonar. This instantly alleviates the lag you've been fighting with in your set up. The answer is no, the mic is plugged into the Focusrite Scarlett, and through its pre-amps, your mic performance records dry and straight and pristinely into Sonar. But with some improvements. Here's the routing again - as mentioned in the Hardware thread you also have presently: $122 for a small mixer with effects (such as reverb and delay). I use this. https://www.amazon.com/Ya...Yamaha+6+channel+mixer$35 mic splitter: https://www.amazon.com/AR...ds=Microphone+splitterMaybe another $20 for an additional short mic cable or two if you don 't have them. Plug your mic into the splitter. One cable from the splitter goes in one of the 2i2 inputs, the other into one of the mixer channel inputs. Headphone jack out from the 2i2, use a simple headphone cable from the 2i2 headphone jack into one of the mixer channel inputs. Your headphones plug in to the mixer. The Scarlett gets one mic input, and this flows directly into Sonar. The mixer gets two inputs: a) the second mic line coming from the splitter (has no effect on the pure signal going into the Scarlett). b) the headphone out from the Scarlett (that is playing back the music from Sonar (with no input monitor in Sonar, so it's just the music). The splitter is just a pass through for the mic signal to the Scarlett - without affecting the signal whatsoever. But it allows a separate line of your mic to additionally get routed into the mixer. Your headphones (or multiple headphones if you use a Y adapter) plug in to the mixer, you monitor from the mixer only. With the mixer you can balance the Sonar music playback with your live mic volume to a desired balance, and add effects to your mic that you hear on your headphones. (These effects do not record to Sonar since this is on a split wire that doesn't even route to Sonar). So you can add a touch of reverb for example to make it sound friendlier for your recording ear. Even though the straight signal is going in dry to Sonar. You can then record into Sonar at any latency you like - even bloat it to a 1024 buffer (if you want to be that ridiculous) and monitor your live singing with absolutely zero latency. It's perfect. It's really perfect. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 records clearly into Sonar without a trace of color. You can achieve this bliss for about $160. I know this works.
