Roberto - First let me just say that I really love the vibe of this song. Reminds me of a cross between ZZ Top and a few other southern rock artists. I played stuff like this all the time in my 'band days'. Guitars sound fantastic ( of course that's my focus) Vox is spot on. Stereo image is great. My only nit would be is that the percussion sounds a little 'damped' to me (snare)? I wanted to hear a little more 'ring' on it.. Now mind you, drums are my weakest point so please take what I say with a grain of salt. Excellent song and playing!!

Thanks for the comments. The problem with the drums is that the drumset itself did not sound very good and I tried to EQ/compress it to get some life into it. The snare rings quite a lot, but not in a flattering way. Unfortunately I cannot re-track either. I may try using Audio Snap and doing some replecement.

I was all ready for the guitar solo and in pops the sax. I was both surprised and delighted.

    Cool piece.

I really like this. Kept my foot tapping the whole time. Good job on the vocals and guitar licks.

Great song. Pretty tight recording. Vocal layers are outstanding.

Man, this sounds great!!! It reminds me of a band that I consider one of the all time greats : "Bad Company" but only because your voice sounds like their singer to me, I'm sure you heard of them, if you haven't check out some of their tunes. You have a great voice and I like the song. I would say : "I am no expert", but the thing is really : "I am" because in the end it's the person listening to the song on the internet or the radio that decides what's good or bad whether they play music or not. In my case right now I am making noise and am working to get back at playing music after a long time away. It's fun either way, I'm not going for a grammy like I used to I am just trying to make something sound respectable.
In my listening expert opinion : "THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!".

    Keep on keepin' on!

    Tazman drive by any chance?

I'm digging the grove. Nice, the feel with guitars, bass drums, nice grove :-) I can't put my finger on it, but it's late 80s early 90s power rock. It's a little bit southern? But not all Southern. It's like Sammy Hagar meets 38 special meets someone with a horn?

That acoustic Sax rox :-) the vocals are "bonus", the mix, the whole thing, very nice in my book :-) Professional.

Thanks for all the positive comments. The vocals are actually sung by my collaborator, Brandon. I write the music and play guitars, bass and keys, he writes most of the lyrics and sings. The drums and sax are a couple of guys from our old band. It's a cool situation cause even though the band broke up we are all very good friends and help each other for recording and live playing.
I will let them know about all the positive comments.

From a totally different genre the song is reminding me a little of Vince Clark's (Yazoo) Don't go.

This is what being in a rock band is all about, lots of noise, tight as you like, straight ahead no nonsense.

I don't mind the compressed 'thumping a pillow' type snare sound I think what brings it a bit of unwanted attention is the fact it doesn't sound quite nailed. I used to get this a lot when the drums were recorded as a separate entity rather than a 'live' take with perhaps just the Bassist and Rhythm guitar it tends to ignite the Drummer a bit more and make him sound livelier. I always used to know when I hadn't quite nailed it because the engineer, too polite to criticise would just say after the take "Come and have a listen", which ALWAYS meant you're gonna have to do that again!!!

Sure you might get a bit of bleed into the mic's but hey this is Rock 'n Roll it's all good in the final mix.

    Lovely stuff!

    Very, very, very cool!

I like this a lot - excellent sax work

Have to agree with earlier posters however regarding the presence on the snare - some work with audiosnap will reap a lot of benefit here. Audiosnap can be a bit of a **** to begin with and it is really fiddly to do replacement well but with a song this good, I think the effort is worth it!

My setup has changed from tracking to mixing.

When we tracked this song (1 year ago) I was using a MOTU 828mkII and MOTU 896HD with SONAR 6.
The pres for drums used was the MOTU 896HD built in ones.
Bass was recorded DI through a Dual MP tube pre to the 828mkII.
I think the vocals were recorded through a Behringer T1953 that I had. We used it because we wanted a gritty vocal sound and the T1953 worked really well for that.
Guitar are a Strat through a modified Boss BD-2 to a '65 Fender Twin and a Tele through a modified Boss DS-1 through the same Twin. The amp was miked with an sm57 and a Behringer B-2 condenser mic (which I use against the grill. It can take a lot of abuse and I like its sound). The mics were going through a Seventh Circle Audio set of pres. I am not in front of the DAW so I can't tell you for sure, but I was either using the A12's or N72's or a mix of both.
I have since gotten rid of the T1953 and the 828MKII.
For mixing (last couple of weeks) I am using a Lynx Aurora16 thorugh a Lynx AES16e. Plug-ins wise I use SONAR 7.02 built in ones plus PSP Vintage Warmer.

The reson it took so long between tracking and mixing is that we recorded 10 other songs and sometime we have not been able to get all the guys together. The album is finally done and somewhat eclectic. We go from rock to blues to pop. But we had fun doing it...

    Cheers,

Yeah, my Tele is modified, I put Texas Specials in it, which I also did to one of my Strats (the one in the song). I really like the tone of Texas Special pups...

Nice tune, man. Lynard Skynard meets Motown or something, which isn't a bad thing at all. Being from the south, and having grown up on LS, Blackfoot, and all that stuff, it's kind of sad that there's not more room for it in today's music market.
