Latest Windows 7 update resulted in jerky SONAR UI during playback/record
I don't normally post things like this and I have no evidence other than my experience this morning. My Windows 7 (64-bit) DAW computer prompted me to apply a critical update this morning, and as it was early I decided to accept it and install. It prompted me for a restart. After the restart, I opened SONAR and started working on my current project. The first thing I noticed is that during playback or recording, the "Now" position marker would move jerkily, like updates every second. Scrolling with the mouse; even hovering the mouse over a widget - it would take 1 second before the cursor changed to reflect the underlying action. Audio playback seemed smooth enough, but the UI behavior was enough to make me stop, shutdown SONAR, and go back one system restore point. After the reboot, I then went back into SONAR. The UI is all smooth again, during playback, etc! So... just be aware that there sure looks like something funky going on with that latest Windows update.

Well which update is it? Was it an update for your video card driver?

Are you sure this isn't that setting the is supposed to perform this way in Sonar. I forgot what it was but when you enable it, this is the results so that you can put less strain on the system. If i push the pause/break key that is the behavior i get.

It's not ScrlLock, Frank. Tweaker, I'll try and find out what was in the update when I get back to the studio this evening. I apologize for not providing that info initially.

Scrolling with the mouse; even hovering the mouse over a widget - it would take 1 second before the cursor changed to reflect the underlying action. As Frank suggested, this sure sounds like CPU Conservation Mode where the GUI updates only once per second for everything, including meters, Now time and widget changes. As he mentioned, it's controlled by the Pause/Break key. Scroll Lock is a different animal.

Brundle, I did not know about the Pause/Break CPU conservation switch. Sorry, Frank. I don't see how the windows update could have changed this setting in SONAR, but... I suppose it is possible. Let me test this out when I get back tonight. If toggling Pause/Break exhibits exactly the same symptoms as I saw this morning when the update was applied, I'll know to test for this next time.

Windows 7 x64 updates have caused me system problems a couple times in the last 6 months. Both times the problems required a system rollback to correct. It's very possible that stickman393 has issues with a Microsoft update. I have auto updates turned off and sometimes the updates just appear when I shut down my system and there's no option to avoid them. I wish I had a dedicated machine that could stay off the grid. It seems that may be the only way to keep a stable system stable.

Toggling the Pause/Break key exhibits very similar UI behavior to what I was seeing earlier today after applying the Windows update. Not identical - but close enough. I decided to risk re-applying the update (every time you go back to a restore point, it creates - you guessed it - another restore point, making reversal easy.) After the rollback was, um, rolled back, I re-entered SONAR and checked out the UI. It seems normal. Toggling Pause/Break shows the periodical UI refresh you've all described. I have no choice but to assume that I bumped the Pause/Break key (it's possible) at just the right moment to make it seem like the Windows Update was responsible. Thanks for your help, guys. Today I learned about the Pause/Break key. (Why didn't Cake put some kind of indicator in the CPU usage widget?)

There was an indicator in the status bar on the boittom right in 853.On my system it is a large letter P with a green background. Wasn't great, but it helped. Would be nice if there was at least that in X1.

I'd quite like to see the return of a simple status bar. This would be independent of the Control Bar, always visible, and have a bunch of those kinds of warning lights. MSR, effects on/off, delay compensation on/off, scroll state, all that stuff. Could just be a really thin strip.

I have auto updates turned off and sometimes the updates just appear when I shut down my system and there's no option to avoid them. You can turn this off. You must be set for "download updates but let me choose when to install them" (or something like that) - but you can change it to 2never check for updates". Where to change this depends on what version of WinDoze you're running...

For all my computers, and all of my client's machines, Auto-updates are set to NEVER download anything. Some are set to inform of available updates. But, I do not want stuff installed without guidance. For my music computers ALLl update options are disabled. No need for such interruptions. When informed of available updates I install the OS updates FIRST, not .NET, not virus,..... Then the .net updates. Then the defender/virus updates. Then IE, and office updates, if any. LAST, ALWAYS LAST, ALWAYS SEPARATELY: hardware updates, video drivers last. I manually create a restore point before installing hardware updates. I donot trust the windows update process to create restore points. I have found they are not always created. I have had video updates nuke about 6 computers in the last 2 years. Having to use the restore point. I will most often get video drivers from the manufacturer's webs. And because wV and w7 stupidly loose printers, and monitors, when they are not power-on when the computer starts, and then recommend updates to solve the problem, I will hide the stupid updates that I do not want installed, ever. This includes video drivers. J
