Layers = Session from Hell!
How do folks! Had a rotten couple of days tracking thanks to layers misbehaving themselves My project consists of a couple of imported wav's set to a click with the task of playing VDrums through Superior Drummer to create a midi track. No other VST plugs were involved and I'm using 8 audio tracks for the various Superior buses - snare, kick etc... Our method of working was to record to a single midi track with layers enabled (Vdrum > Rme card > Midi track!). At first everything seemed perfect - successive takes solo'd the most recent take-layer for us and we got to work on writing some drum patterns using improvised ideas looping around a section of the song at a time. BUG! Previous takes / layers started disappearing, they were not muted via the lane controls nor were they silenced via the mute tool. Every bit of data that coincided with the time-span of the latest take vanished from the clips of previous takes. This behaviour was sporadic and wierdly the old takes would remain intact if we undo'd the latest recording. Usually each new take would create a new layer that was then solo'd ready for playback, just like the manual says! What the heck is going on? Either layers are randomly bugging out or I'm missing something obvious about how this feature is designed to work. Any thoughts ? Gotta get cracking on the tune and dont really fancy having to use another foreign DAW just to do some midi tracking Cheers!

Did you change recording settings to overwrite or slip into punch in mode?

Are there known limits to the number a layers per track?

I'm gonna have another go tomorrow, gonna check me key-binds and record setting status ... with the eyes of a hawk! As for limits on layers - I've created a whole bunch at times, ten or more I'd swear and it doesnt seem to flinch. Would certainly be good to know if there is a limit though. When the layers work it's gold, here's hopin the error is on my end (logical thought withers in the winds of the muse )

musicroom Are there known limits to the number a layers per track? I did a loop of about 20 layers last night without problem. Yep. My guitar playing sucks at times.

Yep. My guitar playing sucks at times. Probably better than you're letting on. :) I occasional go the layers route although I'm a little clumsy with comping. Watching FBB's video helped a lot and much appreciated. I think I need to add a pencil and notepad to my routine.

I'm curious if anyone else has this problem with layer/loop recording: in my case, the latency increases with each layer recorded. I find that about three layers is about all I can manage before the recorded audio seems so far behind the existing track that I can't stay in sync. Any insights into what might cause this?

That sounds like you may need to adjust your "record latency" offset. Sonar should calculate that for you but if for some reason it is out you can adjust it manually using Preferences-->Audio-->Sync & Caching--->Record Latency Adjustment. I check mine by setting up a MIDI track that outputs to one of my external drum machines. I then record that drum machine onto an audio track. Then zoom in with both tracks to see how far 'off' the recorded sound's waveform is from the MIDI note. A drum hit is really easy to see because of the sudden transient. Not sure how you'd check it without an external machine properly but I guess you could use a guitar pick attack against a MIDI triggered drum but that is open to human timing error of course. Someone else may well know a better method.

This is strange. I noticed this happening when I was loop recording a month or so ago where every take would get slowly more & more out of sync on playback (this wasn't noticed during recording) I shrugged my shoulders, identified the take I wanted - nudged it manually to more or less the right position and deleted the rest. My latest loop recording referred to above didn't give me the same problem - every single one of them was lined up perfectly. I haven't changed a single setting inside Sonar. the current project is, if anything, a little 'busier' than the one with the problem. I do know one thing - my latest project definitely had the loop points & punch in points set at the Measure point, I can't remember what I did on the other one - maybe this is worth exploring

I've had something like this. I right clicked in the area of the M/s area for the different layers and selected "rebuild layers" and the layers appeared. Maybe your having the same issue. HTH

I know layers are there.... and I have accidentally triggered them once or twice..... but seriously, I try to avoid them. I prefer to keep it all in one track with no layers. If I mess up I split the clips and delete them after setting the punch points. I'll punch 20 times if I need to in order to get it right. But the end result is one layerless track.
