Layla 3G preamps vs.....

I've been using a Layla 24/96 for years with good results, but it bit the dust. I have a Layla 3G in route. Of course the Layla 24 did not have preamps and I have been using two Symetrix SX202 dual preamps. I chose them...back when my ears were good...over the Mackie VLZ pro preamps in my mixer. I thought they gave a less brittle sound A to B. They belong to my fiddle player though and I'd just as soon be self sufficient. I need some hearing endowed experts :) that may be able to give me some input. How are the Layla 3G preamps against the Mackie VLZ Pro preamps I also have available ? This bit of info would give me a starting point to go from. If by some wild chance anyone familiar with the 3G preamps and has a Symetrix that would be great. But there's not much reference to Symetrix preamps here. Here is what my signal chain has been....Mic >Symetrix> Layla 24 > Mackie control room mixer. I know a wise response would be to listen and make the comparison myself. And I will do that the best I can. But in recent years my hearing has deteriorated. While hearing probs can be dealt with from a "point of reference" way for many things, some things are just too subtle to rely on that. For example, I will ask a colleague to double check my reverb tails when mixing. So...any help you all could offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Gary

I also have a Layla 3G, although I have never used the preamps in it, so I'm not much help there.  However, conventional wisdom says that most preamps included in mixers and audio interfaces are substandard when compared to "decent" outboard preamps, and I suspect that might be the case with the Layla 3G as well.  So, if that holds true, then you might be better off with the Symetrix preamps.  I have heard good and bad about the Mackie VLZ preamps when compared to outboard preamps, but I don't own one and can't comment on those.

Sorry I couldn't be more help with your current equipment, but I suspect you are going to be better served with a good-quality outboard preamp.
