Layla ...
40th anniversary! Man...I remember when it was released...I'm feeling old... I pre-ordered it and it arrived today from Amazon. I went there to put a link for those that may not know about it's release....but now they're redirecting buyers. Thought some like the heads-up. Still haven't opened it....probably wind up in my collection pile....I still have my original LP so all's good.

I have the 25 Year CD (or is it the 20, I forget). Does that make the 40 Year version 20-40% better?

bapu I have the 25 Year CD (or is it the 20, I forget). Does that make the 40 Year version 20-40% better? You'll need all the Laylas otherwise you are 20-40% better than nuthin.

LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS.... is such a heartfelt album. one of my alltime favorites. a moment in time, captured. hanging in miami... duane joins in......and those two played like they were brothers. tom dowd at the helm, is worth the price of admission alone. bell bottom blues, still brings a tear to my eye. The 2011 40th Anniversary Edition comes in two versions. The 2 CD 'Deluxe' edition features 5 previously unreleased tracks, "It's Too Late", "Got To Better In A Little While", "Matchbox" (with Carl Perkins) and "Blues Power" (from the The Johnny Cash Show (TV series)) and a jam version of "Got To Better In A Little While". [11]The 'Super Deluxe' version comprises the 2 CD 'Deluxe' album, a 5.1 Surround Sound DVD of the album, a newly remastered In Concert (Derek and the Dominos album) 2 CD set, a double LP version of the album, a hardcover book, and a number of other extras. i just may have to get a new copy.

bapu I have the 25 Year CD (or is it the 20, I forget). Does that make the 40 Year version 20-40% better? Ask me in ten years. I'm betting it'll make more money than interest from a bank.....so I'll go with at least 40% better. Last one was the 20 and nothing like this package. I'd say this is at least 500% better. But what do I know? I still can't play an Am note.

I can still remember watching Eric playing the "Unplugged" show and hearing the acoustic version for the first time. Jawdropping! Randy

I'll take the original over the acoustic. The angst and desperation that really make the song alive for me... the second edition just doesn't have the same *snap* to it.

I know there are different offers but the one I linked to at Amazon was the Deluxe and below is some info about it. On a personal note...I'm glad I took care of my original album and it is my preference....this is just a great tribute to a fantastic piece of time IMHO. The reissue -– which also includes a double-vinyl reproduction with slightly alternate remixes — features six recordings for what was to be the band’s second album, remixed by the original sessions engineer Andy John. The group’s final recording –- ‘Got to Get Better in a Little While’ — is also performed as a jam and a “fully produced studio version” completed by keyboardist Bobby Whitlock. On top of that, there are four audio performances from the group’s performance on ‘The Johnny Cash’ show from November 1970, including a rendition of ‘Matchbox Blues’ by Eric Clapton, Cash and Carl Perkins. The Deluxe Edition also includes ‘Tell the Truth’ and ‘Roll It Over,’ two rare songs produced by Phil Spector that were released as a single but quickly pulled from circulation. Meanwhile, the Super Deluxe Editon includes a remastered and expanded two-CD set of ‘Derek and the Dominos: In Concert,’ and a hardcover book with essays, rare and previously unreleased photos and new interviews. Other items include a concert ticket facsimile, pop-up 3-D artwork and an art print based on the Emile Theodore Frandsen de Schomberg’s painting ‘La Fille Au Bouquet,’ which graced the album cover. A DVD featuring DTS 5.1 and Dolby Surround 5.1 versions of the album, mixed by engineer Elliot Scheiner, is also included

another weird side story.. the drummer, jim gordon, played that beautiful piano piece at the end of Layla. he's in prison, since 1984. James Beck "Jim" Gordon (born July 14, 1945) is an American recording artist, musician and songwriter. The Grammy Award winner was one of the most requested session drummers in the late 1960s and 1970s, recording albums with many well-known musicians of the time, [1] and was the drummer in the blues-rock supergroup Derek and the Dominos, Little Richard, and Delaney and Bonnie. In 1983, Gordon, at the time an undiagnosed schizophrenic, murdered his mother and was sentenced to sixteen years to life in prison. the list of folks's albums he played on: During his career, Gordon played with a long list of top musicians and record producers, including: Duane Allman Anthology (organ, piano, drums) Renee Armand "The Rain Book" (producer, co-writer, drums, guitar) Hoyt Axton My Griffin Is Gone Joan Baez From Every Stage; Diamonds and Rust; Gulf Wind The Beach Boys Good Vibrations; Spirit of America; Pet Sounds Stephen Bishop On and On: Hits of Stephen Bishop Bread Bread Teresa Brewer 16 Most Requested Songs Jackson Browne Saturate Before Using (organ); The Pretender Jack Bruce Out of The Storm (tracks 1,7 & 8) The Byrds The Notorious Byrd Brothers Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman The Carpenters Horizon; A Kind of Hush Eric Clapton Eric Clapton; Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs; Derek and the Dominos in Concert; Derek and the Dominos: Live at the Fillmore Gene Clark Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen Judy Collins Who Knows Where the Time Goes Alice Cooper Alice Cooper Goes to Hell; Lace and Whiskey Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Box Set Burton Cummings Delaney & Bonnie On Tour with Eric Clapton and Friends; To Bonnie From Delaney; D&B Together John Denver Donovan Life Is a Merry-go-round; Yellow Star; Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth; Lazy Daze Neil Diamond Beautiful Noise (conga, drums, harmony vocals) Everly Brothers Heartaches and Harmonies Art Garfunkel Angel Clare David Gates First Lowell George Thanks I'll Eat It Here Hall & Oates Bigger Than the Both of Us Merle Haggard Same Train, Different Time George Harrison All Things Must Pass; Extra Texture; Living in the Material World Jim Henson The Muppet Movie John Lee Hooker Endless Boogie Jim Horn Through the Eye Thelma Houston I've Got the Music in Me Incredible Bongo Band Apache Dr John Sun, Moon and Herbs Carole King B. Layla is the album that first introduced me to the blues. It's among my top 10 albums of all time. I think... didn't we have a thread about that?

I'm surprised no one has sampled that beat up Baldwin upright featured in the song. They did that with the old upright from Abbey Road, the one featured in Lady Madonna. They did it with Alicia Keys' not-so-special Yamaha. So why not the Layla piano?

The 20th Annaversary remix is very good. You can hear and really appreciate the talents of Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock and Jim Gordon much better on this version.
