Leaf and Stream

Hello everyone,

Here's a new song I've been working on. It was inspired by simply sitting and playing Ivory II (got it for Christmas). It's really the first time I have done any orchestration, so it is a little plain and simple. I had a lot of fun doing it and will likely try my hand at a more complex piece "down the road".

Hope you enjoy!

Regards,
Dan

    Frank,

Just to avoid any confusion, only the piano is Ivory II. Everything else is a mix of other samplers, mostly Omnisphere, Kontakt and Garritan stuff.

John, thanks for the kind words. I was referring to your pure orchestral piece. Starting with a piano solo is easier, I think. I won't know until I try it though, ha ha. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks Terry! Since I had not done orchestration before, I had to force myself to limit the harmonies. I wasn't really sure what instruments normally play which parts in a "real" orchestra, so I just limited myself to 5 sections, plus piano and harp so I wouldn't create a mess. Lol.

Well for a first effort at orchestration Dan, I would say thats amazing. Taking away all the technicalities, sometimes its good to sit back and just say - Is it good to listen to? That is, so peaceful and relaxing without being 'ambient' which to me is the lazy way of going for that effect.

Looking forward to listening to that again, and also to more from you.

Thank you Warren! Practice, practice, practice, right? I will say that this one was easier to mix because there aren't any drums and bass. This was all about sitting the piano in the mix so it could be heard and blending everything else around that.

Yeah, as a keyboard player, you pretty much have to do some orchestration. I'm not sure how your stereo field is set up but it feels like those strings are covering the piano a bit? I would probably bring the piano down the pipe and pan everything else to some degree it is a much more complicated style of music to mix well. Because there is so much going on. I love Ivory, good job on that buy :-)

    Orchestra:

    1. Lay it out with panning, pay attention to which instruments own what part of the spectrum and where they sit in the field.

    2. Use the verb to position some farther back behind others w/less verb up front.

    3. Be sure to have areas of quiet passages and others that are quite loud with crescendos.

    4. Then there's the whole bit about which instruments play when, who has the melody, who has the counterpoint. It is so much more complex and dynamic than pop, rock, country, blues and most of what we do here.

I tried to lay out the orchestra in my head first, then positioned the parts the way I saw them. I spread the strings too wide though, I think. Ended up having to tweak the piano a bit to get it to stand out. You're right though, there are some spots where the piano is still a bit hard to pick out.

I used two reverbs: 1) Concert hall (Perfectspace) where most of the orchestra went using sends, and 2) an ambient space using the Lexicon MXP that the piano and select instruments went to, again using sends. Cellos had very little reverb at all. I tried to do what you suggested by adjusting the send when an instrument needed to go further back. I also HPF instruments that needed to get pushed back even further.

All in all, it was a fun learning experiment and I want to do more. So much so that I order EWQL SO.

This is amazing considering it's your first try at orchestration.  The arrangement is lovely and would work really well in a film or documentary type setting.

    A very atmospheric track.

    Nice work Dan.
