Learning how to process and mix vocals. Check out link for example what I'm looking for.
I am new to mixing and I found a great song called Magic from Emi with what I consider perfect lead vocal sound. It's right up front, in your face but has some sort of seperation too. Here is the link, please listen to it in headphones or on monitors and please give me an idea on how they did this so out front and loud without distorting the levels. I can't seem to do anything like this. Was this done with layering the vocal track with different versions? I hear it is very tight but seems to have other tracks in it.

No matter what I do I seem to distort when trying to achieve this kind of vocal. Is this done by compressing or more eq work. Should I track the vocals low and use compression to bring up levels or track loud and tweek stuff to get this?
Another question I have is in some topics I found that chaining compression works wonders but I'm not sure how to do this. Do you set up seperate busses for each compressor and then send Bus1 into Bus2 and etc then into the Master? Or would you layer them in the effects bin then directly out to master?
Please point me in the right direction. I'm always looking for great sites that explain tracking and mixing techniques.
