Learning to Fly Tom Petty cover

This is one of my favorite TP tracks and it was fun to do. I can't believe how many tracks I have for this one. Everything is played by me except Addictive drums and some supplimental acoustic tracks. There are two different accoustics. The Martin  in Dimension Pro and an old Alverez I have. My friend Mike did a nice job on the vocals and backing vocals.

Any comments welcome!

Enjoy!

I had to listen this right away, love this song.

Sorry all I am litstening to it on is my lappy speakers, still sounds great.

    Good chops.

Can't tell between the dim pro guitars and the real thing.

    excellent mate.

    Question:

I have session drummer 3 and it's the hardest damn thing to find the right loop. It's like they played the dumbest loops and made those the easiest find. As an amatuer drummer I'm saying to myself...where eff is the standard rock beats. They are so poorly classified.

Is there another plugin that's easier to work with? I'd gladly pay money. I spend so much time trying to find the right loops I've just stopped for the most part unless I"m REALLY motivated. Thoughts?

This is a very good cover, in fact, I may like this better than the original.  The guitar sample sounds quite good and could fool a lot of people.

@ Joshua- if you're looking for a good sounding program with excellent loops, consider Superior Drummer or EZ Drummer.  Their loops are well laid out, and even the most basic setup has many usable loops for rock, pop, country, or whatever.

    All the best,

Eric Paul - Thanks for listening and your welcome!

Ben - Thanks, I appreciate it very much!

Sean'O - Thanks for listening. It's one of my favorites also.

RuralRocker - I wouldn't know about loops. I just used the midi file I found and used that. It wasn't right though. I had to repair a lot of it (the music). I just entered the notes in the staff view and worked with that. When I work on my own stuff, I write the parts out as well.

The drums are midi and part of the acoustic guitars. The midi acoustic does not sound quite right. It sounds like an acoustic but the strumming part isn't there. I blended it with my own playing on the acoustic and it worked pretty good. Everything else is me with the exception of Mike who laid the vox down for me.

Lynn - Thanks for checking it out. The acoustic I have is barely passable. Strumming the chords and blending it with the midi track gave it that life.

Thanks again for checking it out everyone!

I think your drums sound OK, but then I would since I'm a drum moron.  I thought the guitar was just a tad loud on the rhythm.

This sounds very good to me.  The lead balance sets well in the mix.  The background vox could come up a tad.  But yea, this bops!  The vocal is good too.

Daryl - Thanks for the comments. I appreciate your insight and will give it another listen.

BOTR - He was all alone. Sounds more like a vagabond out for the first time. At least that's the impression I got from the lyrics.

This is amazing work. I'm trying to play this track as well but stuck on the drums part. I play guitar and playing vocals on this one but any suggestion on how to create the drums track? I currently use Garageband.

    Thanks.

I'm not a big TP fan but I do like this song....  and this version.

Nice job all around, everything seems to mesh together pretty well, and it seems like you have quite a few layers to mesh.

It's been a while for this one. Thanks for the good words! I appreciated it.

PM me and I'll try and dig up the midi file. The drums were not correct so I just rewrote them. The fill toward the end isn't like the original though.

I love most everything TP does and you've nailed the vibe totally with this really nice and clearly lovingly crafted cover. Great mix too! This song was written by Jeff Lynne I believe, they did a lot of work together. Anyway, I'd love to see your track list for this. Great work!

Nice work.  I like TP and you did a good job on this.  Faithful to the original, and if one was to hear this on the radio one would be hard pressed to recognize that this wasn't TP.

The harmony "learning to fly" voxs fit superbly well.

Thanks to Steve for resurrecting this thread, as I missed this one the first time, too.

Takes nerve to cover such a familiar tune (also one of my Heartbreakers favorites) and honor the original as you did. I for one wouldn't have attempted it. Or if I did, it would have come out sounding nothing like the original!

Now, 3.5 years later, I bet you could nail a Petty tune even better, eh? Maybe "Into the Great Wide Open"?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
