Well, no two drum hits ever sound exactly the same. There are always tiny differences that one hears perhaps only subconsciously. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of the drum sounds of the '80s, to be honest.

The big project I'm working on now (my cd) is a progressive album, modelled after the stuff from the '70s... very natural, unprocessed sounding acoustic drums are one of the keys to that sound. That and copious Mellotrons.

I hear you. But I still think EZ Drummer will cover it for you without being so unweildy as to be difficult to use efficiently. Please let me know if you experiment with it.
