Left Undone - dlogan colab

This is one I did with Dave some time back? I didn't have it on my site? So I put it up. This is my mix too :-) Which no one has heard, but his was pretty good :-) I like this one too.

Dave wrote it? It's a very touching song. In fact? I've been touching myself all night while mixing this? (and looking at this picture...) I did some guitar, vocals, mandolin, dobro, and that cello you hear (it's a guitar viol, but it's like a cello) It really is a pretty song.

At the top. I did the best I could with the mix, I didn't have all of the tracks separately. Great song...

The cello? Is made by this guy :-) They're pretty cool, and I have one :-D

It is a somewhat sad song, but a pretty one... Dave and I did a beautiful colab.

Hey, Robby,

Both you and Dave did a great job on this!  I really like the mandolin and the guitar viol parts and how they spice up the backing pads throughout the song.

I also got my fix of "In Despair" and "I Love You Goodbye" as always when I visit your ReverbNation page.

Nice collab, buddy, have a good one!

Hey, I know this song!

This was a great collab - everything you added was perfect. I do still wish you would have replaced my vox on the first verse. But then after hearing me, it does make you sound better when you come in!!

Great sounding mix - and beautiful song.
Lots of textures going on here - all rather excellently placed in the field.
Love both vocals - both very fitting and packed with emotion.
Great, great listen.

nice laid back country feel to it. the dobro & mando are sweet, but I'm a sucker for country acoustic instruments anyway.

most people would have to use samples from BIAB to get a tune to sound this good.   I wish I could play a instrument and not have to use Band In A Box.        A true colab of TRUE not sampled talent

Re:Left Undone - dlogan colab 2011/01/13 03:21:42 (permalink)
Some quick observations:

- Some parts are well recorded and the eq for some of the instruments is pretty good

- The low-end of the first guitar part is clashing with the kick/bass hit as well as the vocals, especially on the lowest note that you play. You need to cut somewhere to make room for it at that exact time to avoid the clash.

- The acoustics are a little dark. Maybe that's what you want probably... but something is wrong. I would recommend either cutting or rolling off the bottom anyway as it's conflicting with the electric at the beginning when the acoustic guitar first comes in. Or better yet, just pan them to opposite sides - have the electric on one side and the acoustic on the other as you are playing the same notes in the same octave at the same time, which is causing the clash. This would avoid it.

- the vocals are very uneven throughout the song:

1) They sound like they were different mics or different takes. The room just sounds different. I think it's best to try and get all the vocals "sounding" like they came from one take, even if they weren't.

2) The volume of the vocals is not balanced for each section of the song. It is louder and quieter as the song progresses, and it's kind of jarring. It's not terribly bad, and might be related to problem #3.

3) The vocals sound a bit too much "in your face", as if the vocalist's mouth was right next to the microphone at times, especially the first vocal part. It gets better when the song picks up... which creates the impression of #2, or just adds to the problem of #2. This varies throughout the song. When the voice is close, there's this crackle that I don't think sounds very good either. Was this part of the character of the mic? A compressor that you used?

There's also a lot of air in this crackle that just doesn't sit well with the other recordings.... it's just fundamentally different. You have these really clean drum and electric guitars... but then you have this crackly air that just dominates the space even when the vocals aren't hot... but when the vocals are gone, the air disappears. It doesn't sound that good.

Basically, everything needs to sit and sound like it was all done in the same room, or by a band playing together. The vocals just have such a drastically different character... it's like they come from a different planet the song was written on.

4) The vocals need to be rolled off a bit or cut a bit at the low end to make room for the bass, snare. The bass aspects and snare are coming through... but it seems that everything is all just "tucked" under the vocals... the vocals are simply dominating the entire track and are not sitting in the mix at all. It's like you have a song, and then some vocals slapped on top of it. It's not part of the same band or song.

Because of the EQ of the vocals is not sitting in the mix, it actually sounds like the kick and snare are higher frequency - especially the snare. It feels like there's no bottom to it at all.

I'm having downloading problems with that website currently, but I heard the first 45 seconds or so. the vocals have a little better tone, but they are still crackly/overly compressed, and they are many dbs louder than they should be. It's really as if the vocal track is just playing over the entire song. It doesn't sit in the mix.

The vocal needs to be prominent, but it doesn't need to blast through everything else. It also doesn't need to take up a spot in every frequency. For most tracks, 80-100hz can even be rolled off completely, and probably should be done at recording time (but it can always be done later too). I've worked on tracks where I rolled off to 160hz on the vocal. A lot of the time, further cuts need to be made to the vocal too, for example, to let the snare through if it's not cutting through correctly.

A lot of the time, you can use a transient shaper or use a good attack setting when you compress to give more power and the appearance of being loud without actually making it louder.

If you want, freeze all the tracks, zip up the entire project and send it to me via dropbox or some other way to share files. I like mixing and I can show you a possibility of what it can sound like. I'll try to keep it a dark mix since that's obviously what you're going for, but you'll see what I mean. If you like the mix, you can use it for whatever.

Yeah I didn't have all of the trax? So some of it is already grouped in a sub mix inside mine? So I can't do a whole lot with it. I just wanted to put it up because it was a fun colab with Dave and I think it came out really good. Now back to a re-record of an old one I had up on my now defunked SC page, that's not on my new RN page. I'm re-recording it with some better plugs, more nohow, and at a bit crisper pace? Oh yeah, and with MORE COWBELL!

Dave, thanks a pantload for letting me colab with you on this one.

Daylaa; Thanks very much it is an emotional song... I was singing it at an open mic the other night and it was touch and go there for a while? I kept touching myself, and they kept asking me to go.

Herbalicious; I guess I could hear a country feel? And I love those country psyco-acoustic instruments too :-)

BIAB; :-) Yeah no loops I guess the drums were samples? But played. I cannot tell you how much enjoyment playing with my instrument brings me? Well I could, but I think it would be a TOS violation? LOL! If I were you? I would start learning how to play the piano "now" you can be pretty good in a few years? And if you can play piano, you have a whole world at your finger tips in terms of instruments? It's the easiest instrument there is to play, guitar is another story altogether! But you can learn the piano pretty quick? Heck, even Janet can play the piano?

Janet, thanks :-)

Rocka, thanks!

Onward and upward to the next project!! Cause it looks like this is "the end." And oh my what an end...

Hi Dave and Robby,

Great collab guys.  I'm really liking the song and the mix.

Love that mando line. The vox sound great.

Cool guitar/viol, too. Very, very nice.
