Legal Ramification of leaving flyer on neighbors doors
If I printed up 500 flyers advertising private music lessons and pasted them all over my neighbor hoods front doors steps? I mean my contact info would be on there so ... I would be easy to get a hold of if I pissed someone off..... is this a good idea? bad idea? Advice and or thoughts ?

Hope you don't mean literally pasting! Pretty sure that's illegal. Putting them through letterboxes would be fine. It can be viewed as junk mail, but I think people only get pissed off with big corporate junk, small, local businesses get a bit more leeway. Have you got any local shops or public areas where they allow people to put up signs for free, or at a small cost? Over here, it tends to be small local shops, or some pubs have notice boards. Eric.

Leave off your name and contact details, then if you piss someone off with the flyers they won't be able to find you.

FWIW, it's not legal to use a mail box for anything but post office business... I don't know how a letter slot compares. If I find junk mail laying on my driveway... happened just yesterday with a complimentary newspaper... I get peeved and call it littering. If I found a personal note from a local entrepreneur such as mooch I would probably be charmed to see someone making an effort to have a go of it. I think it's a worthwhile thing to try... just try to stay sensitive to who doesn't appreciate it. It seems like it would be a lot more effective to get linked in with the local music shops and primary school humanities teachers. Keep up the good work mooch. best regards, mike edit spelling

I agree with Mike that you can't use mailboxes in the US - that may be different in the UK. mail slots on a door may be a gray area. another consideration to worry about putting them up on doors would be the rules of the complex. if this is an apartment complex, check with the office about their rules. if this is a condo complex, check with the owner's association. there probably aren't legal ramifications (i.e. they probably can't call the cops on you) but there could be civil lawsuit possibilities, not that I would suspect anyone would do that for first offense before they warn you not to do it again. basically just check with the authority of the complex before posting them about their policies and you should be good.

Personally I'd post them in public places that gave me permission. (like music stores) There are many legal things that still upset folks and I don't believe you want to do that. Messing around others mailbox is a Federal offense. This is also the peak time for identity theft so mailboxes is sure not a good place to be hanging around.

Before you use a letter slot, place a call to the local post master. They can give you the law on that, but DO NOT use a mail box in any way shape or form. I made that mistake and the postmaster called me with a warning..... do it again and it will cost you several thousand dollars for each separate flier on, or in a mailbox. Lesson learned. You can pay the local newspaper to include the flyers in a run of the paper..... cost varies depending on a number of factors.... but it will get into thousands of homes legally. Also the bulletin boards in shops and stores will be seen by many folks. In this area, there is a waiting line for many of the piano teacher here, so someone looking for a teacher now, might be inclined to call about someone advertising lessons in the local store. Don't forget the music stores in the area too. Good luck. Getting stared is always the hard part. One you stick with it and build a client list, you too will have a waiting list.

Yeah, I think I'd use an email address only, not name, address and phone number.

500 is a lot ! I'd stick with the local music stores and small free publications, maybe your immediate neighborhood and few blocks around it.

Local supermarkets often have free post bulletin boards (physical ones) where the moms or dads can see it with an idea to getting lessons for a child. Slao the supermarkets tend to employ lots of teens.

We don't generally have mail boxes here so it all comes through the slot in the door, good, bad or indifferent. TBH I don't mind the odd flyer but I don't remember ever responding to one either. I'm probably a little outside your target area though.

If anyone gets pissed off, mitigate the issue. Others mentioned its illegal to use a mailbox, that's true, but I don't see that in your words. You're posting flyers on front doors - go for it!

mike_mccue FWIW, it's not legal to use a mail box for anything but post office business... best regards, mike I worked for this person who honestly didn't know any better, what he was doing was folding his fliers and just sliding them in between the flag and the mailbox, after about 2 days he got a warning call from the post office telling him he couldn't do that. I don't work at that job anymore, but honestly I don't think fliers are a good idea on the front door of somebody's house for several reasons. For the most part I personally can't stand somebody coming to my door and trying to sell me something I'm not interested in, especially if I'm trying to relax at the time. Even if they are just leaving a flier on my door, to me it's no different than them throwing garbage in my yard. Not only that, if something goes missing at the time whoever puts that flier on the front door is going to be the first person they look at, doesn't matter if they didn't do anything wrong. I also can't stand these people who put fliers on your wind shield wiper while your at the store. Perhaps a sign posted in someones yard with their permission at a busy intersection might be a good idea, but then again I guess that all depends on where you live, I'm sure in the city they have regulations for that stuff. If mooch finds out he can do that, then he could approach the person he's wanting to put the sign in their yard and offer them a few free lessons for allowing him to post the sign for a couple of months. Just make sure they know there is a time limit for the sign being there, and be sure to remove it after that time limit. He could offer them or the person of their choice say 5 free lessons, mention it would be a great birthday gift for someone if they aren't interested in lessons themselves. Who knows, he might pick up a new customer after they are done with the free lessons. If it's a good spot for the sign and he get's some business off of it, he could ask the person if he could keep the sign there a little bit longer in exchange for 5 more free lessons. Oh well, just my thoughts on the subject. LOL, Fliers on doors = "Old School Spam". Bobby
