Legato playing

Anyone have any tips on making my patches sound legato? I have Z3ta+ and Dimension, but any synth will do.

In zeta I think you only set polyphony to 1 and automatically get legato - in the sense that envelopes are not retriggered when a new note is played before the current note is released.

If you also want portamento (sliding the pitch from one note to the next), you must activate it in the "Global Oscillator" section (it's the GL oscillator page). There's the Portamento mode and time parameters plus some other stuff I haven't played with.

I haven't played enough with Dimension to know where to activate legato and portamento but I'm sure it's somewhere there.

Lots of gear. Not enough time.

I don't know where it is either, but I sure would like to !

    BTW
You should also be able to do Portamento with polophony on as well of course

To set legato playback in z3ta+, just set the polyphony to 1. Portamento effect is controlled by the PORTA MODE and PORTA TIME, in the oscillators global page.

Dimension/Dimension Pro will set legato playback when polyphony is set to 0 (setting polyphony to 1 results in fingered mono mode). They don't feature Portamento.

You will also find patches named 'Solo'. Those patches have several tricks in use to facilitate the legato overlap between consecutive notes, for instance in a solo violin.

Hey Rene there was a Dimension pro song sample with a saxophone. Any idea how the legato playing was achieved?

Saxes are one of those 'Solo' patches I mentioned in my previous post. Also, the Garritan Pocket Orchestra solo woodwinds, brass and strings feature that legato mode, defined in the sfz.

I think my previous post was not precise, or incomplete: Dimension/Dimension Pro do not feature portamento in the interface, as z3ta+ does, so it can't be applied to any patch 'on-the-fly'. With samples, this generally results in a 'trivial' portamento effect, which hurts more than helps realism.

However, it allows portamento defined at sfz level, and the speed can be assigned to any MIDI control (or panel knob). This type of legato/portamento can be achieved on samples with that effect recorded (ala VSL), or as in typical synthesizers by gliding pitch.
