Licence Plate Question

We spent a long weekend sight-seeing with the kids in Washington DC this past weekend.  While sitting in traffic I was staring at a Washington D.C. license plate … NJ is close enough so I see the D.C. plates all the time but, I have never actually read the motto and given it any thought.

The top of the plate says “Washington D.C.” and the bottom of the plate says “Taxation Without Representation”.

OK, I understand that the statement should reflect something about the state (or in this case, “District of”) like NJ, the Garden State or NY, the Empire State but don’t you think the phrasing is funny bordering on ironic?  Shouldn’t it say something like “No Taxation Without Representation” or “Taxation Without Representation is Tyranny”.  I can certainly read into it and add the “No” at the beginning myself but, if you did not understand or know the history of the slogan it almost reads … we are going to tax you without any of your input.

Just an observation.  Anybody from D.C. around here?

Perhaps it really means what it says.....

a few years back I seem to recall some sort of issue in DC over wanting more of a voice in the process in congress. I believe DC is actually run directly by the congress, (congress writes the DC  laws) and the rep for the district has a vote that is more symbolic than effective... if I recall correctly.

Someone from the district could probably elaborate better on that detail.

a google search turned up this: Voting rights of citizens in the District of Columbia differ from those of US citizens in each of the fifty states. DC residents do not have voting representation in the US Senate, but D.C. is entitled to three electoral votes for president. In the US House of Representatives, the District is entitled to a delegate, who is not allowed to vote on the floor of the House, but can vote on procedural matters and in House Committees

    “Taxation Without Representation”.

    Isn't that the current motto?

    From http://www.15q.net/

Washington, D.C. 2001 passenger issue. In 2000, Washington D.C.'s mayor signed a law directing that the slogan on the district's baseplates be switched from the previous "Celebrate & Discover" to the more politically-charged "Taxation without Representation." This new slogan refers to the lack of voting representation for D.C. in the U.S. Congress. These new plates went on sale in November, 2000, starting with the "AZ" series of plates. Bill Clinton (a supporter of D.C. statehood) put the new "Taxation" plates on all presidential vehicles as one of his last acts as President, leaving George W. Bush (who opposes statehood for D.C.) in the awkward position of either continuing to run the plates or going out of his way to change them, a move which would almost certainly anger local residents. Bush was let off the hook when the D.C. government released an alternate-slogan baseplate in early 2001.

NOTE:  this is is no way a political statement from "The Beagle" and is not to be confused with a post which might violate the TOS.  This is an information post only in response to the OP's concern over the possible incorrect wording of the slogan on the DC plates.  Not available outside of the United States.  Tax and shipping not included.  Batteries not included.  Please do not try this at home.  Not responsible for injury or death.  No punishment intended.

    Hmmmm....
I grew up in the garden state and yeah we had a garden.
I moved to the Sunshine state ( Now that is a gross overstatement ... I recall more days with rain than without ).
From there I moved back up North to the Empire State. For such a large state, the Empire exists on less than 1% of it
                                                ( 468.9 sq mi = manhattan / 54,556 sq mi = NY state )
From there I moved to the state that offered the choice to Live Free or Die ( Guess which choose I made ? )
Moved to the Keystone state ... ( Beware of the Keystone Cops )
My plate now states ... Yours to Discover!

The standard logo on Illinois license plates is "Land of Lincoln".  This is due largely to the fact that "Most Corrupt State in the Nation" was a little too long and the number of people that would have to be paid off to enact the change was huge.  The second runner up, "We've got Governor's We Haven't Even Convicted Yet" was not selected due to the fact that no one was sure how long this statement would be true.  "I've Got Your Corruption Right Here, Pal" was considered, but rejected only because it was feared that many people would confuse Illinois plates with those from New York.
