Life on a phone
Smart phones seem to be taking over the world. I hate them and find them intrusive but I'm something the way-back machine spit out. Pedal boards on phones, recording studio's on phones, personal information and social interaction, all compressed and displayed on a tiny little screen. So my question is this; if you can fit everything important in your life onto a phone, how important is your life? And how often do you back up your phone?

My life isn't important enough for a smart phone. I have a plain old one that can barely send a text message. They can be convenient, I don't want to spend a lot of money on a smart phone because I'll just lose it or break it.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys? X2(X3 pending hardware upgrade), Emulator X2, E-mu 1212M, Virtual String Machine

I carry a cell phone- off- I have it in case I want to use it. I don't answer the phone at home- I listen to the message and answer if I want. Family and friends know I do that. My family doesn't hand me the phone...they screen my calls and always ask me if I want the call. Been that way for many years. I have control.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the gullibility of the buying public. Look at IK Multimedia, continuously re-selling the same 10+-year-old products - and we keep buying them - while putting all their development efforts into iPhone apps that we just haven't yet been convinced we need. I consider the iPhone the epitome of poor software design by isolated, arrogant developers who think they know what you and I need better than we do. Well, I suppose you have to give some weight to the opinions of a 20-something who has a nicer car than you.

So my question is this; if you can fit everything important in your life onto a phone, how important is your life? And how often do you back up your phone? I think this is actually a valid question. But the answer depends on the individual really. I hate cell phones period. One of my biggest issues in life, is sitting in a place to eat while listening to someone have a conversation. I kindly ask them to take it outside every time because I simply don't want to hear it. Some get annoyed, then I foam at the mouth...what can I say, I shouldn't have to listen to that. People should respect others enough to keep it down or take the convo outside. How's this for hating them...in my new studio, we have a cell tower that is 200 yards away from the property. I get paid a very nice sum of money to have this on the property but of course, I knew that we'd be getting that "dit didi dit didi dit" sound coming through the gear. So, I had the place completely isolated to where you can't even use a cell phone inside my building. You literally have to go outside...and I did this on purpose. Yep, you guessed it...so I didn't have to hear people talking on their phones or watch them mess with them constantly. As for the apps and importance, I'm all over the place in life. Though I don't need the app part of my phone, it's powerful enough to where I don't have to bring a laptop with me. I like having some sort of computer ability on me at all times. In business today, I feel it's very important. But I do not live on my phone. It's more a life-line for emergency as well as a tool for business when I need it. Email, internet and a few apps that work for me are great conveniences. I back it up every time I plug it into my pc automatically which is about 2 times per week. If only every phone came with an auto-disable when you drive. The one thing I hate more than hearing peoples conversations (those walkie-talkie phones are even worse...I actually look forward to the day where someone gets smart with me using one of them and I force feed it to them lol) is seeing people talking or texting while driving. I think other than how bad our economy and our world is right now, this is my number one pet peeve. I wish a persons car would automatically pull over to the side of the road safely, have a huge boxing glove that came out and punched them in the mouth and their car and phone would be dead for an hour each time they did that. I played a gig in North Jersey a few weeks back. I was on the turnpike and the traffic was slowing down to a crawl. One of the signs on the road literally said "An idiot with a cell phone caused another accident. Hang up and drive!" As much as I love my phone when I need it, I'd not be the least bit sorry if they banned them all for life or had them built into a car to where you must be stopped with the motor off to use them. -Danny

I dumped my iphone ... but now I have a ipad .. and I use it for amp sims - and a note book - and email and surfing the internet ... i always have it with me or in the car - phone is for talking - in private - computer stuff is for computer stuff - and ya - if your driving - get off the phone - especially texting - although i am guilty of talking with a head set on or blue tooth - but the last 6 moths or so i dont even do that anymore
