Great production as we come to expect from you.. Songwise, something seems a bit off in the chorus to me - vocal delivery seems to be a little clunky. Dunno if that was your intention, but for me it could flow a little better.

Agreed on the above ^^^ Excellent song, production and performance though Bob, you really sound scarily convincing on this one! Huge guitar sounds..care to share your signal chain on those?

NOTE: Mix #2 Up 10-19 Thanks to everyone for your input, observations, comments and suggestions! For the new mix, I extended the little drum fill during the first break to make the stop a bit less awkward, I high passed the left side distortion verse guitar a little bit more to pull a touch of low end out, eqed the kick and snare a bit, and used Frank's "split and nudge" suggestion to pocket the "Walk Away" vocals during the chorus and make them gel a bit better with the straight beat. Thanks for hanging in there with me on this one, Frank. To be honest, I didn't think there was any room between syllables for nudging and sliding on the very fast phrasing, and I was surprised how much of a difference a 2 millisecond nudge could make to the vocal groove! Hardly noticeable, but I think it seemed to tighten the chorus vocals up with the drums. Thanks again to everyone who listened and commented, you guys ROCK! shawn@trustmedia.tv: Hey, Shawn, Thank you, Sir, I really appreciate you checking this out for me and also your kind words of encouragement! Nice work on your recent post, "Native Heart" very cool song with a great mix! Thanks again, and have a good one, Shawn! Bob ============================================ philip: Hey, Philip, It's really great to hear from you! How are you, my friend? Hope all is well and life is good! Thank you very much for giving this a listen, and also for your very kind words! I always look forward to and greatly appreciate your input, observations and comments, and your friendship and support means a great deal to me. Thanks again, Philip, and have a great night! Bob ============================================ mesh: Hi, Mesh, How are you? Hope you're having a great week! Thank you so much for checking this song out for me and for your very encouraging comments! I really appreciate you taking time to give this a listen and also your input and observations, that's what helps make this forum such a great place. Sincere thanks, and best wishes! Bob ============================================= jamesyoyo: Hey, James, How's it going, buddy? Hope you're doing great! Thanks for lending your very good ears to another one of my songs, and also for the great ideas and suggestions! On this new mix, I backed down the low end on the kick ever so slightly, because I feel it still has to have some "thump" to get felt through the thick wall of guitars, and as both you and Frank suggested, I tried a little "clip split and nudge" work to try to pocket the "Walk Away" sections of the chorus vocals with the straight beat a bit better. Thanks again for all your past input and advice, James. I think I must be on the right track, because you mentioned three of my favorite bands in your comments. Have a great weekend, James! Bob ============================================ shawn@trustmedia.tv: Hey, Shawn, Thanks again, buddy, for the second listen, and also for the great kick drum tip with Boost 11, I definitely plan to try that trick on the kick drum in a future project. I think on this second mix, I was able to get away with just some EQ surgery to keep the kick drum pretty much in the ball park for this particular song. I'm very grateful for your input and ideas, Shawn, have a rockin' weekend! Bob ============================================ wookie: Hi, John, How are you, my friend? Doing well, I hope! Thank you for giving this one a listen for me, and also for your kind words! Your two latest posts, "Atom" and "The Higgs Bovine" were really great, and also a lot of fun to listen to. Good stuff! Thanks again, John, and best wishes for a wonderful weekend! Bob ============================================ myconsumerclub: Hi, Thanks for giving this a listen and commenting, greatly appreciated! Nice -n- heavy! I like the song. A word of caution though. Never try and hit a drunk. The best way to take care of those idiots is to deprive them of something they most desire, oxygen. Much less trouble and your hand won't hurt after. Of course, it helps to be my size for that.

nice one bob! i kept waiting for you to say ".....in london" heheh great mix, i like your ideas you came up with for the 'new' mix. i use the split and nudge from time to time, it's great. honestly, i actually go thru the entire set of tracks, before automation, and remove all dead space, and tip and tail certain tracks even if i'm going to automate them, i just like a super clean plate of wav files to work with, so often the 'nudge' is all i need. it's a fine tuning groove thing.... i mean, if you nail it in real time, great, but as a mixer or producer, knowing how to do those micro adjustments is way cool, akin to the old cut and tape that the analog guys used to be so good at. honestly, i think you more bass guitar in the mix. the kick is nice and pointy and tight, that's not a problem. but i'm missing the DEEP bass in this..... everything else is good to go

bapu: Hey, Ed, How's it going, brother? Hope you're gearing up for a rockin' weekend! Thanks for checking in on this one for me, and for your positive comment and good observation! As per your comment and Vicente's, for this new mix I extended the little drum fill during the break at 0:23 to hopefully make it a little less awkward for the stop. Nice work with Daryl on the Forum Monkeys' debut release, funny stuff, man! Thanks again for your ears and good input, have a great weekend! Bob ============================================ notnat: Hey Frank, Special thanks to you for hanging in there with me on this one and coming back for another listen! As I mentioned above in the Mix #2 post, I really didn't think there was any room between syllables for nudging and sliding on the very fast phrasing, and I was very surprised how much of a difference that a tiny 2 millisecond nudge could make to the vocal groove! Your suggestion really did the trick to tighten up the timing on the chorus vocals. Also, super job on your remix for "Friends and Lovers", sounds radio ready! Much thanks again, Frank, for all your great input and support here on the forum, and your musical talents and production skills are always top notch. Have a great weekend, buddy! I just listened to the remix, it sounds dynamite :-) But I'm not the fidelity guy? (just ask any of my ex's...) My goal in life is to be killed by a jealous husband. They'd better be close, or good shots? I shoot back... And I print nice tight little groups. ;-)

hey Bob, another new tune already?! you're a machine! as ever a great rock tune. the drums sound better in this one, definitely, but there's something not quite gelling about the drum groove you have going with the opening/chorus riff, which makes it sound a bit awkward and jerky. i think there's too much kick, or the kick is too on the beat, where the riff is a bit syncopated. guitar solo is cool as ever.

paulo: Hey, Paulo, How are you, my friend? Doing well, I hope! Thanks for giving this a listen, and for your kind words and good input! Yes, Sir, after several mentioning the chorus timing inconsistencies, and some good suggestions, I think I was able to tighten up the vocal pocketing on this second mix with a few nudges in a few different spots. Much thanks for checking it out and commenting with your observations, your input is greatly appreciated. Have a good one! Bob ============================================ jamesg1213: Hi, James, How are you? Hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend in beautiful Scotland! Thank you very much for checking in on this one for me, and for your very kind words of encouragement! Yes, Sir, LOL, as I mentioned a few replies back, when I was writing and recording this one, I think I was "channeling" and reliving the biker bar circuit that I used to play back in the '80s. For the guitar signal chain, other than some extra in-channel Sonitus EQ repair work due to the screwup on my Line 6 device drivers(16bit record bit depth instead of 24) from when I setup the new computer, (which I mentioned in detail in my last song post for "The Same",) it's my usual guitar signal chain. This song was my PRS Paul Allender with active EMG 89/81TW pickups into my Line6 Toneport UX2 and POD Farm 2.5. I always record bi-amped with custom-tweaked amp sims, one side is a Diezel amp sim and the other is a Marshall JCM800. The cleaner lo-fi guitar in the right channel is the PRS bridge pickup with the coil tap split, run through a Fender Deluxe Reverb sim high-passed way up and drenched in heavy tremolo. No effects in the track bins other than the in-channel Sonitus EQ, and on the rhythm guitar bus I have the Voxengo Analog-Flux TapeBus for some tape saturation, (I really LOVE that TapeBus plugin and use it on all my instrument and vocal buses), and also the PSP Vintage Warmer for some extra punch. That's about it, James, and I'm very flattered that you asked, because I absolutely love your guitar tones (as well as your top-notch playing), on all of your SMB stuff! Thanks again, James, for all your great input, advice and support from the very beginning when I joined the forum, your friendship means a great deal to me! Bob ================================================ Guitarpima: Hey, Robert, How are you, buddy? It's really great to hear from you! Thanks for checking this song out for me and for your kind words! Yep, LOL, you're absolutely right, "disarm and disable" has always been my motto in those situations, which unfortunately, were all too frequent playing out on the road. Thanks again for listening and commenting and have a great night, Robert! Bob ================================================= notnat: Hey, Frank, Many thanks again for your input and great advice on this, and also for coming back to lend your excellent ears to the remix. LOL, yeah, this thread can also be used as a DIY self defense clinic, as well as audio production advice! I'm very grateful for your help and support, buddy, have a great night! daryl1968: Hey, Daryl, How are things? Doing well, I hope! Many thanks for checking in on this one for me and for your very encouraging comments! I greatly appreciate you stopping by and providing your input and observations, you always do a fantastic job on your song productions. I'm really liking your parody, "Just a Bieber" with Bapsi, that's really a blast of fun! Best wishes! Bob ============================================= batsbrew: Hey, Rob, How's it going, brother? Hope you're having a rockin' week! Thanks for stopping by for a listen to this one, and also your very kind words and input! Yep, I'm also a big advocate of track editing, and always do the same when it comes to removing dead space, pops and clicks, and then adding fades and crossfades. It always amazes me how much "empty room noise" can build up in dead air on multiple tracks. On this one, I just didn't think there was any room to slide or nudge the chorus entry because of the fast vocal phrasing and delivery, and I was surprised to see how much tighter a few simple 2 millisecond nudges can pocket the groove and vocals. For the final mix, I'm going to try your suggestion about bumping the bass guitar up a touch, or maybe just backing off the high-pass to allow a little more lows back into the bass tracks. Big thanks for lending me your great ears and input and observations, your stuff is always totally pro sounding, and I really appreciate your input very much! Have a good one, buddy! Bob =============================================== notnat: You're very welcome, Frank, that's really one fresh sounding modern pop song with excellent writing and musicianship, and great production work, too boot. Have a great night! Bob ================================================ The Band19: Hey, Robaaaaaaaay! Big thanks, buddy for coming back for a second helping on this one, and for your kind words of encouragement about Mix #2! LOL, your "goal in life" comment almost made me spit coffee all over my DAW, there's nothing like a great musician with a good sense of humor to match! Thanks again for checking out the remix, and have a great night! Bob ================================================ mgh: Hey, Mark, How's it going, brother? It's really great to hear from you! I greatly appreciate you checking this song out for me and also your kind words and good input! After your observation, for the final mix, I may try manually "slopping up" the kick drum on the choruses in PRV to shake up the timing a little bit just to see what happens. Thanks again for your time and input, greatly appreciated, Mark. Best wishes for a rockin' week! Bob ================================================= The Band19: Ha! LOL, Robby, just watching that video literally made my voice go up two octaves, I could practically feel the dude's pain through the laptop screen! Funny stuff, buddy!
