Lightscribe!

Has anyone used it? Is it good? Are the blanks good quality? Can you fill a blank CD pretty much to the brim (like 77 minutes) and still print a full front cover with these things? Any ideas on a place to get the best price on blanks?

Thanks!

Haven't used it, but read about it. The blanks are currently much more expensive than regular or printable CD blanks. It's slow unless you're just printing a line of text describing the contents of the CD. Personally, I'd go with an Epson R200, and be able to print full color onto the CD. They can be had for $59 shipped from Amazon.com until Dec 31.

I don't know exactly. It comes with several ink cartridges, one black and several color, so you only need to replace the specific ones that are low. However, if you're going to do a lot of printing, you can also find continuous ink systems for that Epson that making printing less expensive.

Just picked one up in a computer for my Wife. The Lightscribe is a bitter sweet story. It is monochrome and has no impact on the amount of storage you can use as it is just a coating on one side of the CD/DVD.

Like they say burn, flip and burn! with the second burn being the lightscribe etching the label.

So where is the bitter sweet part of the story? It takes quite a while for it to do the label ... around 20 some minutes or better.

To me it really does not matter as I just set it to burn and walk away any way. It is easier than the paper labels and does no damage to the disk.

i found a 30 pack at roughly 60 cents a disc by searching around the net....

i'm trying to price it out to figure out if its just cheaper to get one of hte epson on disc printers and start buying hte printable discs. obviously you can do color with the epson and not with the other, but forgetting about that, just for the sake of having a burned labeled (/printed on) disc, how much the finished disc would be...

With pretty full coverage you can expect to get about 300 CDs/DVDs out of set of cartridges. A tip is to get an Epson Cartridge resetter (check ebay). That resets the chip on the cartridge that tracks the ink level - turns out there's about 30% more ink left when the Epson says they're empty.

Carts cost about $58 for the set at Costco, but so far I have had good luck with the G&G generics at about $28 for the set on sale.

FWIW, it prints stunning pictures on Epson Premium Photo Paper - indistiguishable from photo lab prints.

You can frequently find them bargain hunting:

    How to Internet Bargain Hunt

If you're distributing or selling them to the public, I'd settle on one name brand. I can't recommend a brand, since I don't have first hand experience in this area.

I primarily use ProDisc Media (8x, but will be trying 16x soon as I just upgraded my writers to 16x). Normally for clients I use DVD-R. I also get what's called "hub-printable" media - this lets you print all the way to the hole.

I get my media from Meritline (www.meritline.com). 8x is currently .38 each when you buy in hundred lots.

I also use the Epson PrintCD utility that comes with the printer to print the DVDs.

    Mgaretz,
I'm having great success using Epson R200, and Discus Software from Magic Mouse. http://www.magicmouse.com it beats the Epson software hands down. I also use the Silver lined printable CDs from http://www.blank-cd-cdr.com. Magic Mouse does awesome work on these.

Check my links below to see a cover I printed using MM software.
