Lillian- Melodic Death Metal Song

http://soundcloud.com/ambient122/lillian Hey guys, I know I am probably in the minority with my chosen genre of music, but mixing is mixing, and there are some amazing minds here. This is about as far as I could go. I would love to hear some suggestions before I send this to the rest of the band for approval. We have a female vocalist, so she understandably sounds a little different than a male vocalist in the same style. I know "melodic death metal" sounds ridiculous to those that are not familiar with the many sub-genres of metal, but if you heard a straight up death metal band, you would be able to tell the difference right away. Thanks in advance!

Personally, I like it. But then I like almost anthing metal...

Her voice works. I must admit I approached it with a little trepidation. For what it's worth there are two things that stick out to me. For one, I find the snare a little boxy sounding, there is a mid honk to me but in all fairness I should download it and listen on better speakers, others may disagree.

The other problem, for me anyways, was the lack of diversity in the vocal rhythm. I'm all for "four-on-the-floor" vocals but there is just too much repetition of accenting only on the beat and the song starts to feel plodding towards the end. Works OK for a while but needs some contrast, some syncopation to flesh out the movement of the piece. Too much of anything has a numbing anti-climactic effect.

While this is stylistically different, check this out:

Notice how "straight" the screamo and cookie monster vocals are, at times, then into syncopated or melodic vocals. While this example is a little (a LOT!) extreme and possibly schizophrenic in a musical sense (although that's what I love), it will give you an idea what I mean. Check out the 1:00 mark for some straight 4 vocals, then contrast that the to beginning vocals. I think a small bit of rhythm deviation could go a long way in terms of creating a stronger "flow" thuout the piece.

Well done and I hope you'll take my post as "constructive" as opposed to destructive, whether you find the post of any use or not - you gotta do what you feel is right. To me, it's 90% there but of course that's just me, it's your music not mine.

Thanks for posting. Cheers and best to you.

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately, there is not much I can do about the performances since it's recorded and done with. As for the "boxy snare", please let me know if you get around to checking it out on some better speakers. Also, the video you posted seems to be locked to your region

I'll let you know about the snare but of course it's also personal tase. I guess the way I'd describe it is almost like a small midtange honk, like a small ring that guets pushed by compression but it really is unfair to say without better speakers and possibly better ears.

That region stuff is really annoying. This might work:

Very different style of music, that section is at 0:49 here since it's not an actual "video", but it might give you an idea what I meant in the above post. Of course bearing in mind it's all about stylistic and personal preferences.

This would be a great Halloween song.  It suffers less from the mix than the arrangement, as SToons implies.  However, if your averse to rearranging this, then some attention to the snare drum would be helpful; it sounds like a hammer banging on a nail, i.e. very mechanical and not organic.

    All the best,

My friend is the lead guitar player for Sacred Reich and what I'm missing here is the bass trying to put a hole in my body.  Of course that's easier to accomplish live!  They were big in the 70s and 80s and still play to sold out stadiums in Europe.  They just got back a month or so ago.  I can't remember how he classified their "metal" but this sounds like some of it.  I guess I would pump up the bass(shocking coming from a bass player, huh).  I'm listening on good monitors and that seems to be missing somewhat.  Just my thought.  I just listened again and can tell you that it definitely needs more bass from where I'm sitting.  Well done, though.  Some hot guitars.
