Line 6 PodXT/MC5 Issues - Please help a rookie!
I am having some trouble getting a good setup to record my guitar through my PodXT. Latency is too high for me to be able to sync my playing to the midi tracks which I composed as a template to help me do a good audio recording. I am using a Line 6 Podxt and MC5, I am using a decent Dell laptop but the soundcard is just what came with the computer. I have been reading and trying to understand more about soundcards, and I have this question: is my Podxt actually a soundcard? If it is, does that mean I should be good to go with what I have or do I need to look at getting a better card for the computer? Also having trouble getting my instruments tuned to the midi tracks. I read in the MC5 help that there is an audio instrument tuner effect with the software, but it does not appear in the place where it says I should be able to find it. Thanks for any help, John

Welcome to the forum. Yes, you can use the Pod XT as a sound card. But you'll have to use software synthesizers to hear MIDI through the Pod. You can't route the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth (the standard MIDI synthesizer on most sound cards) through the Pod. Assuming you're using it now. You should have TTS-1 and Sound Center with MC 6, both good soft synths. You can send 16 MIDI tracks to TTS-1 but just 1 MIDI track to SC, but you can use several SCs if you want to. You'll need to go to Line6's web site and download the latest drivers for the pod and your OS. Once the drivers are installed, open MC and go to Options>Audio. See if the Line6 is in the Playback and Recording Device box and select them. Deselect everything else. You may need to run the Wave Profiler again. Change the Driver Mode to ASIO, if available (it should be). Connect headphones to the Pod and/or speakers to the R/L outputs of the Pod. If everything is working right, you should be able to moniter MC playback and recording from the Pod. Good luck.

Greg, thanks for your quick reply. I read a number of your posts before I joined and you always have very helpful advice. I think the problem I was having is that I was trying to monitor the sound through my computer speakers, when I use the pod headphones everything worked much better. Any ideas about the tuner?

Oh, yeah, the tuner. It ain't there. All my versions of Cakewalk software say there's a tuner, but there is not. I think that is from a higher version of SONAR and the reference wasn't deleted from the Help files. Or maybe someone else knows where to find it. What instruments are out of tune? Guitar or keyboard? Saxophone? Kazoo?

It's my guitar that is out of tune with the midi notes. I have been tuning the guitar to the built in tuner in the podxt, but then when I try to record it with the midi as the background they are not tuned the same. It sounds terrible and it throws off my playing to the point that I can't do the song. Is it possible that I inadvertently nudged some setting in MC that alters the pitch rendition? My next try was going to be to just try to tune my guitar to the midi notes but this seems like there should be a better way to keep the tuning the same. Thanks again.

what are you using for output for MIDI? MIDI is not sound itself, it has to have a synth to trigger sounds. whatever you're using for sounds would be what is out of tune (or the tuner in the podxt is not set to A=440 one).

I'm using the Cakewalk TTS-1 input and my Line 6 Podxt for the output. I was able to get it set up and working pretty well this weekend, thanks to the advice I got here. I will check on the tuning of the Pod, I am assuming it is set to A=440, but I will check into that. Do you know much about the Podxt? Is it possible to shift the tuning so it isnt set to 440?

unfortunately I do not know anything about the podxt. most tuners can be adjusted, so I would think you can, but I have no idea how.

Yeah... unless you have adjusted the tuning of MIDI inside MC6... not likely, it should be at A-440. The POD however may have been altered in the past, intentionally or by mistake and is now off of 440. Simply re-calibrate it to A-440 and you should be ready to go. I have the POD2 and it has adjustable tuning.

Thanks GH, I will look into that. Do you know how you go about recalibrating it?

Nevermind my last post, I found it, it was the pod that was not calibrated right. Guess I should wear my glasses more often

I was gonna say grab the POD "pilot's manual"..... but you solved it. I started a project once where I didn't tune the guitar before the sessions and wow...what a mess. Now, that it rule #1...tune to A-440 before punching the record button.
