Line 6 toneport UX1 vs. others

Ive been using my line 6 UX1 for a few years now and it works great.....I was wondering if there are performance differences in other interfaces that I might not be aware such as overall sound quality. I dont do alot of midi via keyboard but on occasion I do dabble in it with a maudio midi/usb connector. But as for the interface, has anyone switched from a toneport to a different interface and what are your comments.    Ken

I would say that if it meets your needs currently then don't worry about it.  you have to move up to the higher range of soundcards to get better quality.

to get the better stuff you need to spend at least $400.

MOTU Ultralite mk3 hybrid (firewire or usb)
    m-audio fast track ultra (usb)
    rme fireface uc (usb)

there are many more in the firewire category

There are lots of options for interfaces out there. i don't think you have to spend $400+ to get better quality but allot of research will definitely be a good idea. Biggest thing you have to watch on usb stuff is the usb version 1.1 VS 2.0 line6 stuff uses 2.0.
Only other real difference is the line6 gear is really optimized for guitar players so it includes amp modeling software and FX that most interfaces do not.

    sorry, I disagree.

usb 1.1 is capable of up to 9 simultaneous tracks.  there are no usb 1.1 devices which have near that many inputs available anyway.  usb 1.1 has plenty enough bandwidth for most home uses.  and there's not really a lot of difference in the drivers and converters for most cards in that range.

I also stand by my statement that you have to move up to $400+ to do "better" than the UX1 converters/drivers/preamps, etc.  there might be some exceptions but most soundcards between $100 and $300 are all very similar converters and preamps.

the reason there's not much of a difference is because technology is so good at this point that even those $100-$300 soundcards are so much better than anything we had 7 to 10 years ago.  they're all on par with each other in that price range.  $400-$800 is the next level and then $900-$1500 is the next level (with exceptions of course).

in fact most of the converters are similar throughout most of the price ranges anyway until you get above $1k.  the preamps, however, and the drivers have different levels below that price.
