List of VST3 plug-ins now available - please contribute
I have a number of plug-ins, but I never installed the VST3 versions of them since I couldn't use them. Now that X3 supports VST3 I guess I will go back and install them. The trouble is - I don't know which ones are VST3 capable. Why don't we all contribute to this thread and make a list of VST3 plug-ins that are currently available? That would help me a lot and perhaps others. (Or if there is a list already made please point me to it). On a related topic, where do these get installed? I have my 32-bit VST2 plugins in G:\VST-32 and the 64-bit VST2 in G:\VST-64. Continuing in that trend I would like to install them all in G:\VST3, but I think they may want to be in a special folder. Any problems with changing the native location? I want to keep my C-Drive as clean as possible and OS-related only.

Most installers want to put them in their own world. I think segregating them from the older VSTs is a good idea.

More significantly, how about a list of functionality that's available only in the VST3 versions of plugins? I've got VST3 versions from FabFilter and Meldaproductions plugins, but nothing in the documentation suggests that they have additional functionality beyond the 2.4 versions. I'm trying to figure out why everybody's so jazzed about VST3. Is everyone just dying to use Vocal Rider?

Yeah, not only that but I have read about performance differences that may not favor VST3. Of course, reading about it and actually testing it are two completely different things. Especially since this is all new stuff.

One potential answer can be found in Noel's blog, where he talks about Region FX. Any ARA-compatible VST3 plugin can be applied to any random audio segment. I read this to mean that if you wanted, for example, a delay on one phrase of a vocal clip, you could define a region and apply an effect to just that region. It's like clip effects but with greater granularity. It's the underlying technology for Melodyne integration. I do not know if any other currently-available VST3 plugins are "ARA-compatible".

Sounds reasonable. What I was reading involved a different host (of course) and it sounded like there were some implementation specific things going on in the host. Like I said, when I get the opportunity to test for myself, then I will have some answers (at least for my environment). I do not have a copy of X3 to test right now.

From the Steinberg VST SDK: About VST 3VST 3 is a general rework of the long-serving VST Plug-in interface. It is not compatible with the older VST versions, but it includes some new features and possibilities. We have redesigned the API to make it not only far easier and more reliable for developers to work with, but have also provided completely new possibilities for Plug-ins. These include: - Improved Performance with the Silence Flag
Processing can optionally be applied to Plug-ins only when audio signals are present on their respective inputs, so VST 3 Plug-ins can apply their processing economically and only when it is needed.
- Multiple Dynamic I/Os
VST 3 Plug-ins are no longer limited to a fixed number of inputs and outputs, and their I/O configuration can dynamically adapt to the channel configuration. Side-chains are also very easily realizable. This includes the possibility to deactivate unused busses after loading and even reactivate those when needed. This cleans up the mixer and further helps to reduce CPU load.
- Sample-accurate automation
VST 3 also features vastly improved parameter automation with sample accuracy and support for ramped automation data, allowing completely accurate and rapid parameter automation changes.
- Logical Parameter Organization
The Plug-in parameters are displayed in a tree structure. Parameters are grouped into sections which represent the structure of the Plug-in. Plug-ins can communicate their internal structure for the purpose of overview, but also for some associated functionality (eg. program-lists).
- Resizeable UI editor
VST 3 defines a way to allow resizing of the Plug-in editor by a user.
- Note Expression
VST 3 defines with Note Expression a new way of event controller editing. The Plug-in is able to break free from the limitations of MIDI controller events by providing access to new VST 3 controller events that circumvent the laws of MIDI and provide articulation information for each individual note (event) in a polyphonic arrangement according to its noteId.
- Factory Concept
VST 3 Plug-in library could export multiple Plug-ins and in this way replaces the shell concept of VST 2 (kPlugCategShell).
While designing VST 3, we performed a careful analysis of the existing functionality of VST and rewrote the interfaces from scratch. In doing so, we focused a lot on providing clear interfaces and their documentation in order to avoid usage errors from the deepest possible layer. Some more features implemented specifically for developers include: - More stable technical Host/Plug-in environment
- Advanced technical definition of the standard
- Modular approach
- Separation of UI and processing
- Advanced Preset System
- Multiple Plug-ins per Library
- Test Host included
- Automated Testing Environment
- Validator (small command line Test Host) and Plug-in examples code included.

I´m using VST3 all the time in Cubase 7 and I can tell you all that VST3 VS VST2 functionality and smoothness is a huge difference. Just wait until you start midi editing, VST3 note expression and automation, then you will see the huge difference to the better. I'm glad to see that SONAR finally support VST3. Q: I just have question for Cakewalk. Does the PRO Channel now use VST3 extension or still programed and based on old VST2.4? Best Regards Freddie

Freddie H Q: I just have question for Cakewalk. Does the PRO Channel now use VST3 extension or still programed and based on old VST2.4?
Prochannel modules use VST2 based extensions currently. We plan on releasing a VST3 version of the prochannel SDK if there is developer demand. So far nobody has asked for one. A vst3 version of this won't have any benefits as such since most of the PC functionality is not covered by VST3 and would still need to be an extension. As such it would be the same in a new package thats all. But if vedors are already working in VST3 then it could be beneficial. Regarding VST3 folders, the standard seems to be to put them in Program files\common files\Vst3 >>Vienna Instruments {multi MIDI ports currently not working in X3} Its not so much that it doesn't work in X3 due to a problem, but that SONAR doesn't have multiple MIDI ports for Virtual instruments in general. We'd have to add some infrastructure to do that. Its worthwhile doing so we'll look into it. Most VST3's only support a small subset of the VST spec (which is pretty normal). The fabfilter ones a fairly full fledged with their support and have parameter groups etc. I have yet to come across a single VST3 that supports built in presets though.

Why doesn't it work in X3? VST3 is needed to use VSL's VEPro 5 full routing capabilities. This feature which offers greater flexibility & better overall performance is a key feature that needs to function properly with all plugins that offer it before I'd upgrade. Hopefully fixed in the next patch release.

Whenever I need to route channel MIDI to a channel effect I use Plogue Bidule. It has extremely flexible (and graphical) internal audio, VST and MIDI routing (with OSC support).
