Listen...would you like to know a secret...do you promise not to tell...
OK then I'll spill the beans. You folks know that from time to time I extoll the virtues of some plug or other that is usually on sale and that I think very highly of. Most of the time this is just my own dimwitted opinion. But occasionally I can recommend one that has a bit more vindication than just my possible lamebrained whim. To whit: Waves has a plugin on sale this month that, while an industry "secret weapon" of choice for many of the top mix engineers, is not widely known outside those circles. The first time I used it was a true revelation and I could not now be without it in my toolchest. I had heard that top tier fellers like Jack Joseph Puig and Dave Pensado and the like thought it was the best thing since sliced bread yet really didn't broadcast the fact as it was an "insider tool". And, of course, I thought yea right, dont' piss on my leg and tell me it's rainin. But guess what?? No...go on guess. It is the best thing since sliced bread and you should download and demo it and then (most likely) buy it immediately. The WAVES TransX. $49 semolians this month only. Try it. I dare ya. You won't be dissapointed. And for you iLok haters (and who ain't??) remember that WAVES is just about to go iLok free on everything. Google it for yourself and see what folks in the know are saying. If this ain't worth $50 bucks I don't know what is.

Here's a link to the product page. So what's the deal with the iLok transition? The product page says iLok required. If I buy this while it's on sale now, will I qualify for a crossgrade when the dongle-less version comes out? I ain't got no dongles and I ain't about to get one.

I was wondering about that too - though I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities to buy Waves in the future. There's quite a few of them on my wish list, and they seem to be coming w/ cool new ones all the time. That H EQ intrigues me. Them going iLock-free is probably one of the best news I could hope for - or worst in terms of personal finances.

Thanks for the info! Perhaps buy first, do nothing (hoping for some cross grade..) and write them and let them know about waiting for a dongle free version.

I would just wait until v9 is released. Unless they do an overall price increase $49.00 for Trans-X is regularly offered at this price.

Just found out that I still have a voucher from last year when I bought GTR Solo, valid until the end of March I think. 79$ for the musician bundle. My habit of never cleaning the inbox will have finally paid off I suppose.

I've also asked about when and how the new "iLok-less" authorization scheme will come into effect. I'll also let ya know what I find out. Tangentially...I have two older iLoks and one newer iLok2. My waves plugs are two of the signature bundles (Maserati and Lord-Alge) and a hodge podge of others. Everytime I get a new WAVES plug it seems that I get dire warnings when trying to assign them to a given iLok "your signature series is weighted heavier than one on this iLok and will therefore be qued"...no foolin...this kind of stuff. I've had to constantly shuffle WAVES plugs around on my iLoks to make those types of messages both go away and get authorized. Luckily I've been able to get everything I've purchased up and running so far but I keep thinking that on some new plug purchase I won't be able to assign it to ANY of my iLoks...SO...I'm really looking forward to the new iLok-less scheme. And how!!

A multi-band transient re-shaper? Sounds cool for $50, pity the iLok rules me out I could find plenty of use for that.

In short they said...yes it's due out shortly...yes they'll email us when it's available...no that's all we have to say now;-) PS: Maybe they'll still have it on special when the iLok-less V9 comes out JB. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

Methinks iffin you've WUP'ed ( Waves Up/dste|grade Plan) you'll get V9 for free. But Dave(Bit) I suspect you have to resister and get the liscense to an iLOK2 (but I could be wrong about that). You all can rest assured that not only does The Bapu have TransX in his V8 Mercury package, he's WUP'ed until Dec 2012 so he'll prolly get V9 for $0.00 (or there about ).

Well, knowing them fellers over at WAVES as I do, I'd have to bet that there will be "some" cost to move your stuff both up to 64bit AND get shut of iLok too. But, ifn I was them...only I'm not, I'd shore as h-e-double-hockey-sticks make sure it wadn't much. That might bring on some torches and pitchforks.

If you mean the TransX I can give you several. Download the demo. Do your best job of Compressing, EQing and Whatevering your Drum Kit. Like what you hear? Think it's peachy? Good. Now put TransX Multi on your Drum Buss and adjust for faster attacks. Hoooochie Mamma! Better, huh?? Do the same with your Bass. Your Keys. Your guitars. Your Vocals. OR...... Maybe you need to keep the same aggression...but with "softer" attacks. Sand off the edge on your Bass or that HiHat or Snare... No probs. TX can handle that too. Experiment. Tweak. Listen. And see if ol JJP ain't right on this one. I say he his.

kurzman So, what would this be useful for? Can you give any examples of why this would really make a difference? Thanks, Brandon Well say you want some guitar picking to stand out a bit more against a wash of strings or pads, or conversely that picking is sounding harsh and you want to push it back some, or perhaps the tone in your kick and snare are good but they are not coming through in the mix with enough punch. That's generally where you'd want to use a transient shaper. Having a multi-band one opens up a lot of scope for rejuvinating loops or grooves you've used before but want to bring out emphasis and re-juvenate some good stuff for use in a completely different mix. Basically blurring or sharpening the transient content against the background tone is where I'd figure on bringing it to play. I don't have it but I'm sure ourolpal will confirm if I'm in the right ball-park there.

Thanks Olepal. Not really 100% sure, but I was under the impression that my iLocks are the older ones and I picked up TransX and authorized it OK. I'm still not 100% clear on this WUP business but I have a plug from them that the WUP upgrade expires next month. So do I understand correctly that I'm stuck with version 8 if I don't let them WUP on me s'more?

Glad you got it Grant, ol pal. And yes, JB you're definitely on the right track. It's lilke using compression not for volume but for "attack coloring and moving". The "Wide" version of TransX can be thought of as a basic stereo or mono Transient Shaper...tho it does a fair bit more than that. And the Multi can be thought of exactly as you describe. Believe me, once you start working with it and really delving in to what it can do...you won't want to be without it. PS: We'll all find out what it all means once Version 9 is released;-)

"no problem if you want to wait, but you can be sure that for any new plugins you buy now before the V9 release, the 64-bit upgrade will be covered under the free year of Waves Update Plan that comes with all new plugins." I didn't know they had a free year of WUP included...

Also keep in mind when you purchase a WUP & depending what you already have you'll probably get a 45 day voucher towards your next purchase (mine was $200.00, not sure what Mercury owners get.)

OK, ol' pal, you knew if you let loose the secret it might come back to haunt you. Initial applications went well - it did what I expected and was easy to understand. But then I put an instance of the Wide Mono on a bass track and that's when things got weird. I had headphones on, and was surprised at the drastic change the plugin caused. And not what I expected! For starters, it was clearly no longer mono and no longer centered like a bass track should be. A phase meter tells the story: Trans-x bypassed versus in-circuit but neutral settings (no transient enhancement) WTF? I thought "wide" meant broadband, as opposed to the multiband version, not that it would act as a stereo widener. What's going on here? BTW, it does not widen a mono track in a pleasant way, either. Transients are pushed to one side, and the middle sounds hollow.

Yes, in principle. I've never been able to get anything useful out of the Transient Shaper, despite numerous attempts. Maybe I need to read the instructions or something, but it's never yielded any improvement on anything I've used it on. There is also a transient shaper in the percussion strip. That one I have successfully used. (Tip: despite the name, it works on other things besides drums.) If you're a Superior Drummer user, it also has a simple but very useful transient shaper. That's what I use most. Trans-X works on a smaller timeframe and does not modify the release part of a waveform, boosting just the first few milliseconds of the transient and then releasing it quickly (although you can make those parameters longer for different effects). The initial "ting" of a ride cymbal, the sound of the stick hitting a snare, those are the things Trans-X brings forward. Another difference between Trans-X and transient shapers is the amount of boost you can give a transient - up to 18db. Although I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that.
