Little Cabin Up On Big Stone Lake

Well, emboldened by speedtom's kind words in a different thread, I offer this 'kitchen-table-one-take' recorded with freeware and a usb headset mic in the spur of the moment.  Applied a couple of the usual effects to make it...presentable.

Anyway, I was happy to finally finish this tune and share it with family.  The cabin still stands after 50 yrs.  Was just there this past August.

Hope you like the song.

A lot of humming going on in the background on this song. I like the song though. Maybe a bit of reverb would be nice, but not a lot. A story about an old cabin can go a long way. I remember an old cabin from my old days out in California. It was a really nice place to go for Labor Day and several people would meet up there and we partied pretty good back then. Then one year a bunch of bikers went there and ruined the place and that was the end for many people. Glad to hear your cabin is still enjoying your visits.

    Peace and Blessings, John

    Great song!

It sounds like your using just one mic. If you had to ribbon mics, one for your guitar and the other for your voice, you could get a good mix.

This shows off your great voice again.  I think it could benefit from closer micing on both the voice and guitar.  Plus, it's a nifty song too. :)

The vocals definitely sound distant, almost like there was a mic sitting in the middle of a room with bare walls. Lots of room reflections. The guitar sounds much closer than the vocals, and doesn't seem to have nearly the amount if room reflection. That said, I absolutely loved listening to this song. Your voice has a soul and an honesty about it that just makes this song. Wonderful lyrics. I really love your voice, and your feel on the guitar was perfect. This song has so much potential. I just feel that the guitar and vocal sound detached from each other. It's a beautiful song. Great piece of writing and performance!

I hope the biggest point you got out of my post is that I really think this song is beautiful. I don't want anything else I said to overshadow that. It's an awesome song and you're a very talented singer/player/writer. Best wishes.

I kinda like the low-fi table-top recording.  I thought I heard birds chirping in the background.  A lot of my favorite songs are like this.  Like that Chris Whitley album he recorded with one mic in a machine shop.

This song doesn't need a lot of production because it's a great song as it is.  But yeah, a polished version would be excellent to hear.  It should stay solo acoustic though, imo.  The lyrics are fantastic man!!!  Great Job Man!!!

thanks ralph for speaking from my heart! I love the song the way it is, the take has something magic to it. You may get a nice, clean, polished version if you try, but maybe you are polishing the magic away as well maybe it is indeed the birds?

that said, of course I encourage olemon to produce a new version - we can only win!

The thing is here that we all have a pre-conceived notion of how a perfect produced pristine recording should sound,, from listening to the radio etc and when you listen to this song the first thing that dropped into my head before even listening to the actual song was yea, this is a real home recording, distant vocals with background noise bla, bla, bla, it was only after 30 seconds that I realised that it doesn't matter jack ****, why? cos this song is awesome, played well and conveys the story and emotion. The sonic quality of the recording was quickly forgotten about!

Having said that, all this needs is some closer vocal micing so I can here that voice right inside my brain!

    Well done,

I agree it's good song and it sounds like you have a nice voice to go with the nice guitar playing.  I agree that it would be really good if recorded on better equipment.  You did good with what you had , though.  Less reverb on the vocal might bring it up front a bit more.  It's a good vocal.  Look forward to hearing mor of your music.
