"Live" Recording - Please listen and help!

Hey guys,

A while back I posted a message on one of these forums seeking advice especially on miking a drum kit with only three mikes availabale. Here's one of the results. Any advice, help, comments etc on how to improve this mix would be hugely welcomed, but please read this first to appreciate what may and what may not be realistic.

This is the band that wanted everything recorded live in one take, no overdubs, recorded in a wooden hall in an idyllic bush setting. For logistical reasons, I had to record with my Yamaha AW16G (8 input restriction) then upload later for post production with Sonar. This song was the biggest challenge of all. This is what we used:

Mike 1 - Guitar Amp
Mike 2 - Vox (then, at the end of the song, tin whistle after the vocal finishes)
Mike 3 - Violin
Mike 4 - Mandolin (and Banjo near end of song)
Line 5 - Keyboard directly in (Piano)
Mike 6 - Snare
Mike 7 - Kick
Mike 8 - O'head Percussion

You'll find the work in progress mix here:

Fisher Widow

The mix in terms of the prominence etc given to different parts is largely as determined by the band. But as for improving the overall sound (within the obvious limitations caused by the recording process itself), any ideas would really be appreciated! Thanks folk.

It may be instructive to see what mastering can do for this. I LOVE mastering live mixes like this one. You can download a snippet HERE

Thanks Jonas, but I'm not sure that this song is ready for mastering just yet ... there's more aspects of the mix I'd like to work on some more, such as the panning and positioning of instruments, and a few other issues. But when it gets to that stage I'm sure I'll be grateful for your offer.

Granted. Your mix should sound BETTER than my existing master. That sound is "in there" somewhere.
