Live Sound Mixing with Sonar?

Just wondering if it's possible...  What I would like is to build a max. 2/4-up rack box running Sonar and 16 Mic/Line input high-quality DAC/Preamps w/no discernable latency.  Next, I would like to remote control (wireless) the DAW from a multi-touch tablet.  So, basically, the DAW/Mixer hardware would be on the stage and a tablet could be used to control the mix from anywhere in the venue (500-1000 ft wireless).  Anybody doing this?  I believe there would be a huge market for this, if the package could be built and sold for < $1500.  Most of the existing solutions cost > $2000 to setup a wireless, live mix and don't have the ability to record....  Ideas?  thanks.

To directly answer your question: Yes, it can be done.

The system crashes during the live performance, then what?

Are you willing to take the risk?

Live boards sometimes have issues as well.  I guess what I'm asking for is something the industry is not ready for...reliable live performance hardware/software.  BTW, I use a computed for my guitar processor live (Fractal Audio Systems AXE-FX Ultra)...no problems there with reliability and performance is stunning...so, why can't it be done w/a DAW and remote controlled?

This is being done by many people NOW !!!  I run 24 tracks live and do front of house mix (with remote laptop) and record all 24 tracks at the same time.

Personally, I'd say go for it.  Just keep your DAW real clean and optimized.

I've been doing what you're talking about for about 5-6 years.  The only difference is I have Sonar on one computer (using the playlist) and then on a separate computer I have my Yamaha 01V96v2's software which allows me to control pretty much every part of it through the computer.

Then I use TightVNC to wirelessly control the second (mixing) computer with a laptop.  Never had an issue (knock on wood).

At first, we just tried it at low-profile gigs.  Now we use it everywhere!

A good friend of mine ran sound New Years night at the Bellagio in Las Vegas this way last year.  It's pretty impressive the first time you see your soundman walking around with a laptop doing his thing.

With the power of the new processors, I would think one computer could easily handle both jobs.

BUT, always have a QUICK "Plan B" ready.

The entire goal of live recording is to simplify the process to avoid glitchs that can happen due to unforseen technical problems.

SAC is truly amazing. My good friend owns a live sound company and has it totally integrated in both his large and medium systems. And he uses SAW to capture the performances. They work together perfectly!

    Very cool!

I've done a bit of live mixing and recording through SONAR. On one occassion I was doing a live FOH, Monitor and record mix all at the same time. It was a big juggling act that didn't work too well.

It was purely an experiment. The focus had to be on the live FOH and monitors. Recording played a secondary part and I'm  glad because I was pretty busy with recording results not too stellar. Learned a lot.

As far as mixing live though SONAR though it's no problem. really great patching for FOH, monitors and other sub mixing.

I've done it too, no problems. Did FOH plus recorded 16 tracks at 128 buffers with a fair fews compressors, reverbs and EQs inserted. Sounded great. As has already been mentioned stability is always the concern with software solutions, but I've never had any probs with my DAW, so went into it pretty damn confident. She didn't let me down either.

As far as wireless controllers goes - don't know!

It'll be so easy dong FOH with X1 with Pro Channel on each strip...

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

I've been researching the same thing and this is the best solution I've come up with so far:

And here's the part you're going to love about it:

You'll get an all digital mixer with all the FX you'll need and everything at your fingertips (no mouse needed).  This can be control from very long distances and with zero latency using an iPad or similar device with the aid of a screenshare program.  Once you record everything into the laptop, you can later mix the project in Sonar.  Even if the laptop crashes, the show still goes on without interruptions!  And again, I have to emphazise this, you don't have to set things up using a mouse (which is a PITA to do in a live setting).  You would need a MIDI console to make things hands-on, so might as well just get a real mixer.

    My 2 cents.

Hehe..  Great thread.  I'm currently looking at DAWs like Sonar X1 when I stumbled across this post. Right now I've been doing live sound with ProTools 9 recording 14 tracks with a stereo bus into Sony Vegas with a PA mix, Monitors, internet stream in Winamp.  It's quite the setup and let me tell you when you have hundreds of ppl counting on you its a big deal.  I'm sweating bullets everytime.  Or crapping my pants is more like it.
Good luck!  I need to read more reviews.  I may go with X1 or Cubase 6 over PT 9.  Actually did one of these mixes in Abelton and it sucked because the tracks don't line up when putting them into another DAW.  This was my PT M-Powered in Win XP.  Currently I run PT9 in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and it's not as stable..?

Can you do this type of mixing in Sonar X1 and is it stable with super low latency?
Here's a vid of me actually crapping in my pants ->
