Live Vocals - CLean or Colored?

Hello, I want to use my Gap73 with my live vocal rig. I'm also currently researching to buy a compressor for the rig and I'm unsure if adding a character comp to a character preamp would be too colorful and less suitable for a wide range of songs? Or would a clean compressor be a better choice? Thanks.

Hello M@B I had a look at the GAP73 and it looks like a very nice unit for sure. My thoughts are that it has three transformers built in. One for the Mic Input, one for the line input and an output transformer.

Something people forget is that transformers colour the sound. Not in a bad way of course but in a rather nice manner but they do colour the sound. So IMO I would be looking for a more transparent compressor that does not colour the sound too much. If you get a compressor that also colours the sound then you might be adding too much colour!

One can get way too carried away with colouring the sound! Obviously if you can do it try the two compressors with the GAP and see what you think. There is nothing like a listening test.

Thanks Jeff, I was figuring as you described, but didn't know for sure. I suppose a high end example of this type of combination would be a Neve 1073 preamp and an LA2A. I've never knowingly heard this combination, so I couldnt say what it sounds like. Thanks again.
