Lochness (remix 8/19/14

This is a first outing for the track. I still need to tweak it some but would love to hear any opinions on how to make it better.

Guitars used: Ibanez RG and Les Paul custom for the distorted guitars. Les Paul Custom and 1964 Custom Byrdland for the clean. The lead is my Ibanez. The bass is a P bass with a  Jazz neck and pups for P and J style. The drums are Addictive Drums 2. I am also singing or whatever it is I do.

Comments, good and bad, are welcome.
Enjoy!

I finished a remix just now. You can listen to the new version of Lochness. I ended up omitting the Byrdland guitar as it's electronics has a problem. There was this static I could not get rid of. So I rerecorded that part and thinned out the amount of guitars I was using. I also tweaked the drums quite a bit and added a conga part at the end. I think I've got a better mix here.

The weird part is I can't upload, via IE, to Soundcloud. Luckily, Mixbus will upload for me. I don't know what that's about as it says I need the latest browser and that's what I'm using.

    Robert,

    Your vocal ability is improving.

Personal taste, the harmony break guitars seem a bit too wide.

Your vocal style/sound is very similar to mine without the lethal element (I jest)

I quite liked and enjoyed the tune the mix is quite well balanced though as noted by Ed the lead is wide.  Also so for me the tom runs sounds slightly out a bit like they are from a different kit???

The song is very dark lyrically and the vocal needs more edge and rawness if you want the listener to believe what you are singing about.

    Thanks for listening everyone!

I'll check out the clean guitars. I'm trying to decide what to do with them. I recorded both parts for each side with each guitar. I think I'll save a few other versions and experiment. I appreciate the feedback. I never thought that about the toms though. I do use different parts of different kits for my kit, all the toms are the same, using AD2. Maybe I rolled off to much low end?

    Thanks again for listening!

Cool stuff Robert.  Very unique vocal styling and well executed.  I agree that the toms do seem a little out of place but really good work in Addictive Drums and it isn't a showstopper for me.  Nice work.

Thanks Tony. I was looking at my preset that I use in AD2 and realized that I had mismatched toms, for some reason. I've since fixed that but haven't had time to get back to it yet.

    Robert,

Cool song.   I like how it starts out harder and mellows at the end.   Some of the drum fills sound a little funky (mechanical) not bad, but slightly robotic.   Just picked up EZDrummer2 and am very impressed with their canned MIDI loops.

    Nice work

Same as what others have said:  drums need some work (mainly the fills) but a pretty cool track otherwise.  I agree that you should treat your voice or sing even more growly (if that is a word) to really sell it.  I know the guys in Mastadon often have one dude singing the growly stuff then another singing over him for a cool layered effect....

Thanks for the comments. I realized what was going on with the toms. Since I write in GM, AD mapped it different since AD only uses four toms. Some of the hits were rim shot hits so I remapped and rewrote the fills. I also figured out how to make the guitars sound more chunky. I'll repost the new mix when I can.

I love this song, Robert!  Your arrangement took me on a winding path that I wasn't expecting.  This is a throwback to an era that gave us songs that were larger than life, as this song is.  By the time I heard this, you apparently fixed the drums because I was nothing but impressed with them.  The sound of your voice in this song is quite sinister sounding, and I love it!  It's always good to hear a song that doesn't sound like paint-by-numbers, and this fills the bill.

    All the best,

Thanks for those very kind words Lynn. I have fixed the drums, and did that turn out to be a nightmare, but I haven't updated the mix yet. It would have been easier to fix them had XLNaudio decided to add another tom to the kits but they left it at four. I've since made other changes as well the bass being much tighter. I found a little gem. A free VST at Boz digital labs called, "Bark of the dog". You can focus a bit of oomph at a certain frequency and give it more body or punch depending on what you want.

Plus, I'm taking more time in between listens so I don't miss things as much.

I think I heard the last mix...great composition and song!! I think the drums could use just a bit more umph and clarity as could the mix..maybe just a bit of sheen on it...good stuff though for sure! I had a situation recently where I mixed on a set of monitors that were too mid range forward and this caused me to make a mix that was mid range lacking.

    Nice playing Robert.
I like the song a lot.
I'd like to hear the drums a bit more "upfront", but that's just me. Also like to hear your vocal a little louder.
Maybe just a bit more panning on everything would be the ticket.
But those are just personal preferences on my part, everybody likes things differently.
Overall it's a killer piece of work!

lol..this is a very strange tune...in a good way...i felt a bit of Zappa coming on now and again. I wish I could sit in while you were doing the vox work cuz I think I'd push you to take a few more chances and come out of your comfort zone...but I think that'll come over time....

Thanks for the comments. I think I got rid of the boxy feel of the drums and they are a bit more in your face. Just a bit though. As for my vocals, I can't sing so I came up with the next best thing. lol!  I appreciate the Zappa comment. I can't say I've ever heard more than 2 or 3 Zappa tunes ever but I know a lot of players hold him in high regard.

Cool tune. I like the mix of the guitars and bass... nice solo.   And not bad for a non-sung lead vocal.

Mix-wise, the toms still sound a bit out of place to me, perhaps a little too high in pitch and dry?  I'd also like to hear more "pop" on the snare.   And maybe some delay/echo during the vocal sections at 2:11 and 2:50?  Just some random thoughts...

Because there are a lot of tom fills, I think these lower pitched versions just fit the feel of the song.

I'm definitely liking this mix much better.

Thanks Stevec. I had 2 drummers in mind who have very similar playing styles. One was my late friend Robert Scott whom I wish I never knew personally but would have because  he was that good. The other is Terry Bozio. I always try and mimic Robert's technique when I write for drums. I saw Terry Bozio play with Jeff Beck and was blown away. I like Beck but Terry stole the show.

Thanks for the good words Wookie! I appreciate it.

It's no secret around here that I think believing in god is nonsense. I try not to put down people because they believe because it is their choice. Ironically, there are those who say they believe and yet, I hold more moral values than they do. I believe that humanity can overcome it's flaws and work together and ultimately, live in peace. I have no delusions that it will be easy but eventually, peace will come. This is the gist of what this song is about.

Ok, what an effin weird ride you just took me on.  Love the writing, the guitar playing, the sound, the totally delicious twist of style, damn that's good stuff.  Not sure I care for the vocal stuff on the first half but the second half really worked, in my opinion of course.

Can't say I like all of this song Robert, but it's a creative trip for sure. What I do like though, is the beautiful guitar work from around the 3 min mark, and I couldn't help wishing you'd shut up so I could hear it! Nice lead guitar after the spoken vocal ends too.

One thing that puzzles me - the title, Lochness? I'm familar with Loch Ness, obviously, but I don't get the connection.
