Long Time Cakewalk/Sonar User

Hi all, I'm a long time Cake Sonar User - From Cake 6 up till Sonar 8.3.1. I've been watching the SONAR X1 Producer, Studio & Essential forum from the sideline since they released X1. Wow! - Lots of posts about stability, crashes, and patches. It's because of these posts that I've chosen not to upgrade. I just can't see upgrading to a version with many problems when I've got allot of work that needs to get done. It would be a different story if this were a hobby for me. No big deal waiting on a program to get fixed when there's no deadlines. But that's not the case. Things need to be done "yesterday". And now I see Sonar X1 Expanded coming out soon. Question - Is X1 stable to a point where it makes sense to release Sonar X1 Expanded? I'd love to hear some opinions on this. Best, -Mike

Works fine here, no issues really. Just download the demo and try?

This should turn into an interesting thread. It's working fine here, stable as a rock but there are some bugs, whether they'll impact on your workflow is another matter.

I think the benefits far out weigh the bugs though and have done since day one for me. As suggested download the demo and try for yourself, some others are seeing much different results to me.

That is what makes me cite just the opposite. I have not had significant issues with X1 from day one.

It's stable enough I guess, but I think their focus should lie elsewhere imo.  There's no reason my progam should completely crash b/c I tried to loop a region while the audio was playing.  Maybe they're focusing on that for the next version.  Who knows.

I too have been with Cakewalk since DOS back in 1988.
Contrary to all the hoopla going on, you can do amazing
    things with X1C.
I build my own PCs, and have mixed results using the same hardware
with different motherboards. So what works for someone, may or may not work for you.
If things don`t work for you, this forum is wonderful place for help.
But I am not a bit skimmish about chaning hardware if things dont work
right. Because when things do work right, WOW!!!!
    Sonar really comes thru.
I run Sonar X1 on my i5 laptop, win 7, 64 bit, 4 Gig mem,
also on my desktop Q6600 quad core on a MSI motherboard,
2 gig mem, win XP and Win 7 32/64. Multi-bootable drives.
Either system runs X1 quite well.
Yes there are a few little things that to some,
seem fustrating. Overall, for me, its 99% fun times,
1% reading the forums for those having issues.
I learn of the bugs here, and avoid them.
This forum saves me a lot of time wondering if it`s me, or something else.

You should go for X1, the things that you can do with it, are amazing.

    zwatrif,

    1) Some people buy cheap parts to a computer (and interfaces)with cheap drivers, and wonder it doesn't play nice. This is why Apple by and large doesn't have issues - but you pay for it. Buy the high end parts/interfaces and it is fine.

    2) Some people don't know have too much crapware on their machine, bogging it down as well.

    3) Some plugs don't play well.

    4) Why don't you download the demo and discover for yourself? The guy in my bands likes to learn of guitar tabs posted by tone-deaf 12 year olds and then gets pissed the song doesn't sound right, but had he took the time, he could learn for himself ...ya know?

I concur with what donbelisle is saying, X1 is stable. I do not enjoy the interface as much as 8.5 - but I am optimistic between Panup's mods and next version this won't be an issue. It is not perfect, but it is stable.

Is X1 stable to a point where it makes sense to release Sonar X1 Expanded? I'd love to hear some opinions on this.
In my opinion ... no. They really should have gotten the core stable before they worked on the add-on's, add-on's that are an essential part of one of the components that are still buggy ... the Pro Channel.

They say there are bug fixes for the Pro Channel in the new Expanded pack, so you won't really know if the Pro Channel is fixed until you buy X1 Producer, then buy X1 Expanded, or wait for another patch to come out for X1 Producer that may or may not fix the Pro Channel. I put it that way because they are having a hard time reproducing the problem some of us are seeing. And it's not just guys in home studio studios who are seeing the problems, guys in pro studio's are seeing some flaky things with the Pro Channel as well on professionally built DAW's.

So, are you going to use the Pro Channel or 3rd party plug-in's? If you are using mainly 3rd party plug-in's and rarely use the ones included with Sonar X1 Producer, do you really need Producer?

Actually Don made the most sense. X1 seems to be particular of which system it's going to run well on so you have to decide, do I have the right system? Do I have the time to troubleshoot?

It's really up to you do decipher all the information and decide because only you know how you work and what you use and how much of a risk taker you are.

Listening to guys say it works perfect but there are bugs, and guys saying, it's buggy as hell but I use it anyway, isn't going to get you anywhere ...

there is no daw that is bug free.  not on pc or mac.  i run X1c on a vista desktop and on a W7 laptop i7 sony vaio.  all versions have been stable for me.  only opening multple projects in X1a caused crashes.     i run a professional recording studio near philadelphia.  theres no way in hell i would use it if it was crashing while i was working with clients.  the bugs are minor and rarely affect my work.    i do not prefer X1 over 8.5, but i do like screensets and the prochannel.  i suspect that most people who have serious issues with sonar probably have hardware or other incompatibilities.  i have been very lucky in that regard.  i also suspect that the forum represents avery vocal minority of unhappy customers.  that is why i have become a fanboi, i feel like i have to speak up and make it known that there are people having smooth sailing and happy clients :)     myspace.com/blixyz

Funny thing is I recently purchased another popular DAW because I had to learn it for various reasons.  I go to those forums and people complain just as much there as they do here.  Kind of funny.

If I understand the email I received correctly, upgrading to X1 will be 45% more expensive form Tuesday onwards. My general reluctance to upgrade is not driven by the bug reports, I really like the 8.5 interface and did not care for the Feng Shui look of X1. I am the type of guy who likes my pens on the desk, not in a drawer. However I must say I would prefer X1 over several other DAWs I have looked at.

Works just fine here also-no stability issues, crashes, etc, etc. Yes, this should be interesting. But, you have deadlines, keep using what you have and download the demo and take a peek

X1a was NOT stable on my system.

    But from x1b onwards I can't recall a single crash I've had.

The new GUI takes a little getting used to, but that's not a complaint. I remember having to read the manual, Scotts Power book and post numerable questions on here to get to grips with the previous UI.

    it's what's known as a learning curve.

    Re:Long Time Cakewalk/Sonar User 2011/09/17 03:34:49 (permalink)
I think you should buy it. You'll have one of two experiences. a good one or a bad one.
This far into the release cycle though you benefit greatly from the work put into all the updates and with X1C you are more than likely to have a positive SONAR experience.

A few bugs are still around from previous versions - acknowledged by Cakewalk but fixes for many of these aren'tever likely.

a few bugs are difficult for Cakewalk and oithers to reproduce 'reliably' and that makes fixing them very hard.

The ProChannel bugs fit in the above category but even those bugs are acknowledged by Cakewalk.

For some (don't know the exact number) this release is reported as being the least stable ever while still others report their experience with X1 as positive from the date of release.

One thing is certain and that is that X1 has illicited an unprecedented wave of complaints on this forum and an ongoing battle  between the "it works on my system so your system is at fault" to fanbois who won't have a bad word said about cakewalk and then there are those who don't understand what the fuss is all about anyway. Did I mention the group who want it to work but are really struggling to get it to work reliably without locking up in the "white Screen" where SONAR becomes completely unresponsive. then there are those who don't like and won't
work with the new GUI and those that are working hard to get to grips with the changes and finding it difficult.

The noise on this board has made it difficult for that group to get any help because it always goes back to "your system's" at fault.

In the end I say go buy it; we did so you should too. Support Cakewalk but don't expect miracles.

I have a professionally spec'd DAW that is only about 18 months old and was built for SONAR 8.3 to 8.5 and X1 is the only software I have trouble with. X1C is working well enough that I can now at least work with it to get to know the new workflow imposed by the new GUI and menu structure. This far into the release cycle to only be at this stage is disappointing but my anger has long ago dissipated to a more resigned position. That is I'm resigned to continue using 8.5.3 until I'm have the same confidence in X1. that I can get my work done without lock ups and other inexplicable behaviour.

Never had any stability issues with any previous SONAR version and I've got them all and go back to Cakewalk 7 about 15 years ago. Still I seem to be in the minority

There is no denying though that X1a was a really dodgy release and Cakewalk could have held back about 3 months and maybe saved themselves and many of us a big headache.

All the best to you. Go for it.

In general, it's in Sonar users' best interest for Cakewalk to make lots of money (to fix bugs, develop X2, update soft synths, create more video tutorials, etc.).  This creates a natural bias towards recommending people to "buy it".

People who recommend you to wait have a different agenda.  They want Cakewalk to feel pressure to fix bugs first.

None of us can control what you do.

But we all have an agenda.

I have Sonar X1c installed on two computers. My old XP ASUS AMD rig and a new Win7 64 bit Intel i7. My old rig barely gets by, and crashes like ti always crashed with Sonar. The new computer is flawless. This is my conclusion: don't upgrade if you are not going to get a new computer. If you get a new computer, get the right one. It's all about the computer and its component parts. Sonar will not have any problems if you have the right rig to run it on. Period. End of lecture.

Go for it.
