Long standing irritation with midi clips...

 I've been using CW DAW's for awhile. Honestly, I only use Sonar on occasion & have used MC to the same extent, because I find having to bounce down midi clips very annoying. Most DAW's record or have the option to record midi in the same clip as merged data. Unless I've missed something all this time, CW only records new data on top of the previous midi recording. I don't understand CW's logic on continuing this setup. Am I missing something or is it possible to loop record midi in a clip & have each newly recorded notes/data, merged into the clip without having to bounce to clip?

    Hello....

    Bouncing midi to audio is actually easy.  simply highlight the track, and select BOUNCE TO TRACK and click OK... a few seconds later you have an audio track.   You can also FREEZE the synth and it renders a temporary audio track. 

    I don't use loop recording so I'm at a loss on that one. I tend to use the method of deleting the clips I don't like and do a one shot recording..... repeating the delete/record until I get the clip right. 

    In MC4 I have it set up for audio anyway to not merge the new with old.

    Hello Kine.  It's been a while since you've been around.

    yes, you can record "sound on sound" - that's an option you can choose instead of the default "overwrite"  you didn't specify which version of sonar or MC you're using, the way to get to it is different in different versions.  in Sonar 6/MC4 you go to TRANSPORT>RECORD OPTIONS and change the checkbox from OVERWRITE to SOUND ON SOUND

    if you have an X flavored Sonar/MC, then go to Preferences>PROJECT>RECORD and change the same setting there.

    Thanks for the reply guys.I have X1 producer & earlier versions of Sonar & MC. My irritation is with sound on sound, because it merely stacks clips on top of each other. When I loop record a drum part for instance, I want every new part I record to be merged into the same clip like every other DAW actually gives the option to do. I don't want the parts to be separate performances stacked on top of each other, which is an issue when you want to move the clip or convert it to a groove clip. From my experience, you have to use the bounce to clips feature in-order for the parts to become a single midi clip. I'm not referring to bouncing midi to audio. It's just irksome to have to do that extra step every time I'm loop recording. Most DAW's merge each newly recorded event into the same clip. Just in case I somehow missed a setting, I thought I would ask about it here.

    Doesn't it give you that option? 

    I never use the loop recording feature so IDK...... I will look though next time I open it..... not likely this weekend though.

    Yeah... looks that way! This aspect of Sonar has been in long need of updating. All the major & minor DAWs, either by default or option, merges newly recorded events into the same clip. CW/Roland is holding on to a legacy setting that should be an option, not a default behavior. They need to add the option of merge recording. But yeah...that's 1 reason why I find myself not using the program much. Unnecessary work cripples creativity.
