Longshot but anyone interested in doing some mastering for a non-profit?
I do part time work in an urban teen center studio. We provide free studio time to kids ranging from 12-20. There would be no pay since there is no budget. I also warn that 80% of what is recorded is hip-hop. There is occassionally gospel and R&B. I realize hip-hop is not exactly the genre of choice on these forums but imho, the best mastering for such often comes from people who do not have the same personal attachment to the genre. I also warn that some of the lyrics are not family friendly. This is an issue that has been debated back and forth for years. We have a compromise of sorts in place to allow them freedom of expression with the condition they must create songs that are more positive in addition. I could go into the whole complexity of things like n-word usage and such (not a fan but i understand to a degree), but I am not seeking approval for them but someone who can be clinical. Figure someone may want the challenge of stepping outside of comfort zone. Thanks for reading.

Thanks. Sent PM with links to artist that is closest to being ready. He creates his own music. Tracking is done at studio in logic, but on his tracks i mix them at home in Sonar.

I would be reluctant to do anyone the disservice of mixing, mastering or advising on the making of hip-hop, as I simply have near-zero expertise in the genre. But I do enjoy encouraging kids to explore intellectual pursuits that might eventually free them from the herd mentality of mindless consumerism, me-too-ism and the myth that you can purchase a personality at the mall. Tell me more.

one of the things I have found to be true ( at least for me) is that music is music. We may like some more than others and there may be a few fashionable trends for the moment, but the basic laws of physics stay the same. In hip-hop the voice tends to be out front a little more but the knowledge you have is valuable regardless of what you apply it to. It is also an opportunity to learn. I certainly don't expect you to suddenly get platinum grills and 24 inch rims, but sometimes a better understanding of cultures different from your own can be rewarding even if you never fully embrace. I know I learn stuff constantly when dealing with kids from different backgrounds. I never would have imagined I would form close bomds with kids from Afghanistan, Iraq and even Nepal. Our program is pretty simple. We have a modest studio available mostly consisting of donated equipment and software with a few things thrown in via small grant and ournown personal assets. Any kid in the community can use for free. Although most simply record, they are welcome to get tutoring in music production as well. Most post on soundcloud or put file on phone, but a couple have ability that could have wider appeal. There are is a diverse group who sing mostly gospel in their native tongues that blow me away with their raw talent but have not come in consistently enough to complete a full project. Part of what we are trying to impart in these youth is the importance of finishing and following a process. I face many challenges in this. From the complexities of handling the extreme diversity ( over 140 languages are spoken) in the school district due to this community being a UN settlement area for refugees, to the stunted development of dealing with kids who never had a father. Some are angry. Some are confused. I know I cannot save them all. I know that their language and outlook on life is not always what i want it to be, but this is my foot in the door to at least provide an outlet to express themselves in a way that beats the crap out of the alternatives. Basically what I need is simple mastering. Our space has some limitations, although getting ARC 2 ( there goes the rest of my budget) has helped so I don't trust what I hear completely and I tend to find having someone else master at a different location yields better results for me. Hip-hop mastering has a few minor differences but I stress minor. The kick, snare and voice are probably more pronounced than most genres but not as much as many assume. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond and listen.

Hey Dub, I would be interested in helping out with this as well. I am an ardent supporter of music for kids and feel it is a sin to remove music programs from schools. That genre is not my strong suit, but I definitely could use opening my horizons, and proficiency is proficiency regardless. How does this all work? I am a bit wary to bite off more than I can chew, but this cause is definitely a good one. @Bit, regardless of genre, you are one more than "qualified" for such. I have had your songs page linked for a long time and have always admired your skill and know-how. I have always been impressed with that page (as well as your philosophy there).

As I indicated to some via private message, in order to keep workload down and expectations to a minimal, i will simply send a stereo mix for mastering to whoever is willing. When the entire project is finished, I will find whoever is willing to give the tracks a consistency before pressing. Of course i will make sure proper credit is given.

Dub, I put CD text on the files I gave back. I just want to make you aware. I can modify it or strip it as you prefer. I used minus twelve on the EBU meter for the master. We should probably all master to the same agreed level if you plan to release as a composite work like a single CD.

I have always wanted to do something like this but getting started was the hard part. For me the opportunity came my way when i was looking for activities for my own son. I saw they had a studio but it had very limited hours do to budget and staffing issues. i volunteered to contribute and have been involved since. Although you cannot contribute, thank you for at least taking time to read. Even if it gives you an idea, that is awesome.

Grem..thanks. mastering is not my thing either. I'm still surprised the kids seem to be preferring my mixes to others that are moire used to mixing hip-hop. Not saying I want this treated lightly, but considering the lack of budget , I am taking the stance that beggars cannot be choosers. besides, I figured this would be a great learning experience for anyone who has the time on their hands. The kids are on spring break so I don't expect to hear back from him this week.

Good idea. -12 is OK, if that's what you want. Better still, present different average RMS levels to the kids (volume-adjusted, of course) and let them decide which one they like best. Could be educational for them.

I have been trying to educate them on the loudness wars. I think i am finally getting through to them (which is a big challenge in hip-hop) that having too many bass elements competing is asking for trouble. Another thing i have been trying to emphasis is that sound practices mostly work across genres.

Geoff, how about this...export a 5-second section of the song, unmastered and 32-bits. Open a new project, import that short file and clone it so you've got 3 identical copies. Put separate instances of the limiter on each track and adjust for -8, -12 and -14 respectively. Adjust each track's volume so that they're all at the same subjective loudness when played back. Now you've got a demonstration that most people will never have the opportunity to hear: the same material mastered to different standards. With the right song, I'll bet this will make dub's loudness-war lesson brief and persuasive.

Very good strategy, especially if it is their own work. Another question to throw out here... since some of these will be mastered twice (as they are going onto EPs), is there a recommendation for the first iteration? Being unfamiliar with this genre (and having never mastered an album), I am leery to collapse the dynamic range on these dramatically since it would allow for no leeway in the final (EP) master. Is this a correct approach to take?

Great work dub. Having an involvement with the youth in your community is a good way to give something back. I hope they appreciate your effort though I'm sure you're just glad to be doing it.
I had a few teachers as a youth who taught us music and on the side helped us become a small community of like minded young people. It was a great time in my life and I remember and appreciate their efforts and the influence it had in my life.

hello all who have agreed to help. i will likely pvt message you all. i think i will just share a drop box folder with anyone wishing to participate. i have to say that gswitz and mettelus did an awesome job so far. gswitz..the consensus on the two you too crack at is that there may be just a little too much sizzle on the high end but very nice otherwise. I think if you dial that down just a tad and it will be exactly the sound the artist was seeking. mettelus- your file was also awesome. slightly different approach. Yours sounds more like the underground hip-hop sound favored by the more "conscious' type of rappers. Evidently the artist wants the exaggerated vinyl sound left in there. I know i sound like a broken record, but i want to say thank you to all of you again. This is a prime example that solid sound principals trumps constructs like genres. I'm almost finished mixing another and would like to give Grem a shot since I think such experiences are educational for all involved and help bridge gaps.

Thanks for the feedback. The hiss on the second I sent is louder than the original track, but the other tracks were also brought up. I just did a third (sent you a PM with link), which makes the vinyl hiss more pronounced, but beyond that I would actually need to drive the music down. Not sure if you have the opportunity to A/B with them in person, but that will definitely make the changes clearer to them. This is definitely a challenging and fun exercise for me, especially with material I would never have picked on my own. So the folks reading this thread can get a chuckle... I actually removed the vinyl hiss completely from the first master I made just because I have a no-noise fetish But it was obvious enough to ask if it was intentional.

Hello people. I have not abandoned this project. just got bogged down with a lot of work, travel etc. Plus, the young man involved has been in the process of moving. I uploaded a new file ready to be mastered for anyone with the time to take a crack at it. The artist liked the results of each version so far. This is the last vocal submission for what looks like will be an EP project that will also include several instrumental tracks.
