Look ma, no sound booth!

Well I guess this is what's happening now at smaller festivals. No sound booth. Dude sitting on a lawn chair with a iPad.
Not sure I'm sold on the concept yet as the sound was far from perfect, but that's possible even when there's the best equipment being used.
For sound check the monitor engineer would stand beside the performer with an iPhone and set their mix in the wedges.
There was a lot of digital clipping coming from the bass which was a typical Ampeg set up, Not sure which brand of desk they had , it was in the monitor pit and looked like it might have been an x32.
Overall it was clear and punchy, good vocal and guitar sound but the drums were weak.
Plus side is it made room for about 20 more lawn chairs in the sweet spot.

Great little festival featuring top talent from the Inland Empire,,  30 min from home too.
If you ever get a chance check out either Bobby Patterson ( formerly the Fat Tones)  or Too Slim and the Taildraggers.

Lot of these bands can been seen at Spokane's Pig out in the Park for free this coming Labour Day long weekend. I'm sure they will still be using a sound booth....

We have a Behringer X32 at church and it has an iPad app which has all the functionality as the board (and actually moves the faders on the board.)  Its good for checking the mix at various points in the room during sound check, warm up and rehearsal, but during the service, I want to be in front of the actual board as it has more controls right at my finger tips.
