Looking for Advice on new PC

Hello all :)

I recently acquired sonar home studio 7xl and now (without going into boring details about how my laptop died...) I need a computer for my music production. I would really appreciate some advice as I want to buy a pc which is going to stand up to the pressures of music production.

I am using;

EMU 0404 midi/audio interface
Sonar Home Studio 7xl
Roland EP97 Keyboard
Jam Man Looper box
External mic

I want to run XP on the computer as I know the EMU works well with XP

Many thanks in advance for your help :)

I'll go with the i7 processor and 4 to 6 gigs of ram. For the motherboard you should research for that.

Asus P6T Motherboard Intel LGA1366 Platform
    Intel Quad Core™i7 920 Processor
    6 gigs DDR3 Ram
    Windows 7pro 64 bit
    Roland GW-7 workstation
    Korg Padkontrol
    M-Audio U Control Uc 33
    1010 LT Delta Sound Card
    Project 5 V2.51
    Sonar X1 Producer
    Komplete 5

Are you buying off the shelf or building?

    I built a box....

    4gb RAM
    i5-750 processor
    ASUS P7P55D MB @ 2.66ghz
    XP operating system

very sweet, very fast.  All the parts were under $800 with a reused LCD monitor

I went with XP because all my programs and plugs and VSTs are 32 bit.

Depends a lot on what you mean by music production. A few tracks of audio does not need much muscle. but if you plan to migrate the machine to a professional studio in the next year or so, you might want to go state of the art. Are you talking about a laptop or box? Six gig of ram will be no good unless you are using a 64 bit OS. Buying a lot more than you need will leave you short of cash and running old technology in a couple of years when you really know what you need, or your interests have changed.

Thanks for publishing the specs Guitarhacker. I am not looking to build myself, but this kind of information is generally useful to the community and can save someone a lot of time in research.

Are you on a tight budget or are you willing to spend the amount it would cost to get your dream machine?

My first DAW computer was a simple off the shelf Dell 1720 ..... it still runs great..... I just built the new box for more horsepower.
