If you look at the data provided, the peak design year was 1995.

I was driving an 86 VW GTI then with no A/C.. a little step up from the Fiat Panda i drove on the autobahn

the muffler was held on by bailing wire... I traded the whole car to a local mechanic for a new tire on my GTI. The GTI has a flat and the mechanic said under German law he couldnt repair the tire since it was High Speed rated so I needed a new tire

This was my POS first car (and it looked about that good then). It only lasted about 6 months. Then I got the Ford Falcon.

    Hi,

With an engine that has heads that are made up of plastic, and the engine compartment does not have enough cooling space, which means that your engine will last ... maybe 2 years if you are lucky ... before it springs a leak and you find antifreeze OIL in your radiator!

    Re:Looking for a car? 2012/06/12 14:41:46 (permalink)
    My first looked like this:

A '71 Gold Coupe DeVille Cadillac which, with the help of a crazy uncle*, had a 560 large block, Positraction, dual Holley 780's with extra large secondaries and a Littlefield blower.  It got almost 5 mpg when used properly.  I could probably carry ALL of the band's gear including all of the band and all of the groupies in that tank.  I once went to a drive-in with 11 people in it.  My best friend had sex with his girlfriend in the trunk! (which was 8' x 6' 2" with lots of head room).

The damn thing had so much power it was virtually undriveable and would fishtail around every corner so my uncle put in some type of mechanism where I had a switch under that dash that would somehow limit it to just one of the carbs (you had to really step on it to open the secondaries anyway).  Good race cars give the driver feedback from the road, this was NOT a good race car.  On a straight off-the-beaten-path road down near the Mexican border we got it up over 160mph and it felt like it was floating side-to-side - did it once and never again!).

*My "crazy" uncle as I called him (really a 2nd cousin) was also a multi-millionaire due to inventing the glass elevator (the first was put on the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego).  He was the Chief Mechanic for an Indy car for two years during the mid-60's.  He had a 3-story mansion (with elevator) in Dulzura southeast of San Diego that included a large 6-bay car shop and race track.  He was a bit eccentric (ok, more than a bit), but he sure was fun if you were a young, mischievious boy growing up!

That certainly beats my first ride. It ran relatively well, right up until it was stolen for parts. And the local police were even nice enough to cancel the parking ticket given out after the car was stolen! Can't really complain - I got this car for free.
