Looking for a definition

Is there a name for the space between the highest point in a wave and the outer edge of the track?  A friend off mine sent me a drum track where the tops of all his waves are chopped off flat.  They are obviously clipped.  I'd like to show and explain  to him that the entire wave needs to be captured and that it would be best if there was some _________ space between this highest point in the wave transient and the upper or lower edge of the wave.  thanks.  JP

Right, headroom. Refers to the distance between clip peaks and the maximum numerical value allowed (for the project sample size). However, there is a way to scale the waveform display so that the wave takes up more vertical graphical space. Then it might appear clipped when it really isn't. In other words, the edge of the track doesn't always represent the min/max. If it sounds clipped, it is. But if not, it's worth checking the audio scaling of the track display.
