Looking for a volume fader vst
I am looking for a simple volume fader, that goes to zero, that I can insert as a vst effect and automate. I have tried the Sonalksis FreeG, which is great, but it crashes X3 when I automate it. Anybody know of anything similar?

IIRC Blue Cat used to do a Free one - not sure if they still do but you could have a look

An empty FX Chain would work.

Waves have a bass rider and vocal rider, which can be automated or may even be automatic already, if that might be what you need.

I use Blue Cat Audio's Gain, which is free and comes in mono, stereo and dual-mono versions. This is what I automate vocals with for amplitude leveling, inserting it pre-compression.

Pardon my inexperience here - why would you want an external fader? Bob Bone

It helps to have a fader that you can insert in-line with other plugins rather than just the usual Gain and Volume options at the front and back ends of the chain. For example, say you have a bunch of vocal clips that you want to make equal in volume. You'll likely put a compressor on the track, but if the levels of each clip are all over the place the compressor will act differently for each one because they're all hitting the comp at different levels. Insert a fader VST in front of the compressor and add an automation envelope to control the gain plugin's gain. Now you can get all the clips in the same ballpark before they hit the compressor, which will then be much easier to dial in. The same principle holds true for any track where you use a volume envelope to tame certain hits or phrases. A standard volume envelope does its thing at the end of the fx chain, so whatever mischief those stray hot peaks have done to your effects can't be mitigated by the envelope. Better to put your automation at the front of the chain, or in front of whichever effect is most prone to acting wacky when it's hard. Reverb inserts, for one.

I like Hornets Vu meter for this task since it has an autogain feature. It takes a bit of time, but works. Hornets Autogain Pro is also a very useful tool. Hornets Track Utility would be nice, but It kept crashing Sonar here.

Looks like inter FX-level monitoring/checking would be a useful feature...

Bajan, Bit, Use FreeG as a transparent workhorse and have had no troubles. The BlueCat unit recommended is free and great. Dual BlueCat manages channels not quite as easy as FreeG, since FreeG has a single pan to shift left and right. Versus separate right and left knobs on the dual BlueCat. Not a big thing. More fire power however with BlueCat as far as decibel range, and just had to use it on a chain to bring up a plug that was attenuated to obscurity. Can't tell if BlueCat is as transparent as FreeG, but seems to be. John

Any gain plugin should be transparent unless the designer explicitly wanted it not to be. It's not like it does any complicated DSP - just a simple multiplication. I only use the mono version of the BlueCat gain plugin, because I primarily use it for voice and bass. A single, simple "Gain" knob is all I need. FreeG does have the nice meter and RMS readouts, though.

Brilliant, scook. Thank you. The thought never occurred to me of using an empty effects chain for that purpose. They even have simple metering and they can be automated.
