Looking for some links...

I have some questions about (non cakewalk) recording hardware and techniques. I have heard mention of other forums on here like musictown? etc. Does any have any links to good sites for this type of thing? Thanks

ummm yah, I had forgotten that there are some non CW forums at this site as well. Still would be interested in knowing what your 'other' favourite home recording sites and forums are.

THe coffee house and the techniques forums are two places that are kind of a "if it doesn't fit anywhere else" ...it will probably be ok there.

Musictown is/was a forum-type thing set up by Robomusic. If you find one of his posts you can get the link.
But it was never very active despite our attempts to get the newbies in there for instant help on the Musictown chat line.
I've never been on any forums other than the Cakewalk forums.

what kind of forums are you looking for?

www.gearslutz.com is a forum for "gear slutz" - but they are pretty rowdy and snub their noses at anything costing less than $1k US
www.homerecording.com is a "home recording forum'
    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/ guitar forum
    http://www.guitarforums.com/ another guitar forum
    http://www.punbb-hosting.com/forums/themodernvocalist/index.php vocalist forum

I could come up with some more, probably, but it would help if you'd narrow it down some.

I am basically active on three forums these days, here at cake (MC and Sonar X1), PG music (Band in a Box & RealBand), and Reaper. As I use all of these softwares. I find that on any one of them i can get good solid advice from users of hardware and software.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

I still have the software, and still beleive it is one of the most stable, and productive. The forum is virtually a ghost town, but the software needs very little support as it seldom has any bugs or issue. I know it well, and may go back to it eventually

I love MTS. For basic tracking it is so very solid, and it has so many features hidden that i love. One feature that it does not have (there is a workaround) is the ability to send out all 8 tracks from jamstix to separate tracks in MTS. You need to use sidechaining to get that to work.

I bought Reaper to test some of the new features, heck $60 for that it is a great tool in the box, and X1e due to the cheap upgrade, $69. I found MC lacking at times, and for a $40 upgrade why when these others have more to offer. Each seems to have some great features, but none seem to have it all. Wow we all already knew that.

Sonar has scared me off for a long time due to all the crying and whining about bugs and stuff, and the price. BiaB/RB is my song scatch pad, and i have found it very useful. I can pound out a new song quickly in it, and can even master and finish, but lack of proper automation and full VSTi implimentation hinders it being my "one" DAW. So until PG adds those type features into it, I am looking for the one that will be my go to to polish and finish a project. I want to make a very detailed search and settle in on what i really like, because upgrade cost are a lot these days.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

I don't let the crying and whining upstairs bother me.  most of it is exactly that.  just whining.

I've been happy with Sonar Producer for several versions.  I skipped versions 5 & 7, but have all of the others since versino 4.  I don't want to say too much but I haven't had to be financially responsible for my versions lately.

I still love BIAB and I upgrade it every year, but not during the summer.  but I use it to as a scratch pad, then I can also export real tracks or MIDI for instruments I don't play and use those as backing tracks in sonar.  but I always process in sonar.

I installed X1e and it open and ran. I loaded the audio tracks and they sounded good, and ran. I added effects and they worked good! But i have to say that is true of all my DAW software. Over the years MC has been more setup hassles than my other software.

When i first tried Reaper it was buggy and crashed constantly. I could not track not a single track with it. Now it is as solid as a rock. MTS has never give problems i have had version 3, 4, and 5 so far i have skipped 6, but will most likey go for 7. But if I choose either Sonar or Reaper i might just stay there, just because there are more people to share songs with here, and you get response faster. It is a tough decision, because i have track a lot of songs on MTS, and it has never failed me.

I would track completely in RB, if it had all the things i like, node based automation, better VSTi coding, and was stronger in the ASIO driver world. I like to build, mix, and master without bouncing around. But sadly it is a way behind other DAWs, not far but still. The reason i use it at all is because it is really cool for playing live sets, with the chord and lyric window. I know Cake has those two, but you have to type everything in, not in Rb it picks it up automatically. That and the RTs and RDs are a powerful setup.

I can make just as good of a song in RB, but i do not like the fact that it does not automate to the level of Soanr or others. It does have draw in automation, but it is more work to get it right. Plus I need a pile of outside plugins.

What i am tired of, is the constant upgrade cycles. With Reaper it is every couple days there is a evolutionary update that adds either features or fises, and with cake, and PG it is annual and even semi annual upgrades with "50 new features" you feel like you have to have them. Over at PG the upgrade sometimes are not backwards, you get new RTs but they won't play with the last version, so you have to buy if you want that set.

I would love to see them just add a few really needed features and sell a butt load of new RTs and some new RDs.
