Looking to upgrade. Version depends on a specific feature.

I'm currently running MC4.

I would like to make use of the comping features I have read about in Sonar HS, Producer etc. where when recording in sound on sound mode to get several takes and have them line up in different lanes in the same track. This is not available in MC4. It puts the takes in either additional track or overlaps them in the same track. I've found it difficult to piece together the take I want from these sources.

Which of the latest versions offer the Sonar HS, Producer, style of this feature (same track - multi lane)?
MC6?
Essential?
Studio?
Pro?

I can't fully answer that question pete, but i have never really needed that feature. I just do each take on a separate track, and pick the best track, and cut and paste in sections i want to add. I find it very simple and easy.

I guess that takes allows you to use automation to listen to the "takes as if a single track, and then bounce them to a new track. Sounds great, but to me also a lot of work setting up, and I wonder if faster than my old method?!

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

    ditto on what Robo said.

and to expand on that... I have never done it that way. Everything you hear me do is done with ONE track per instrument or voice.

I will punch in and out, but layering is not something I do...to edit and build one track. If I record a track and somethings not right I delete it all and start again.   that's my preferred method of working.

A good example of how i do a track is as follows. Let's use a vocal track for instance. I will usually sing the vocal twice before i arm the track to record. Then i go theough the song about three times live and record the full three cuts.

Once i have three full tracks of the lead vocal, I usually use the third one, as it has been practiced about 5 times at that point and has less mistakes and more good spots. I usually moce that track to the top of the vocal tracks and then listen to it carefully, and with a pad pf paper in hand jot down notes where i do not like a phrase, or line.

Like for instance if I flub the start of the chorus coming out of a break, i might then listen to the other two tracks at the time point, and if one is nailed to my liking i copy, and paste that over the bad one.

I repeat this until i have either fixed each bad spot, or ran out of fixes. Then if i am not still happy with it, i will start the song a few bars before the bad place and record just that line again, and copy and paste to fix.

Same can be done with guitar tracks, or whatever. I would imagine having takes within the track is a good thing, but to me not necessary.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Thanks for finding that link Beagle! That's good to hear. I was planning on Essential anyway for the extra $20 it seems like a good deal.

    Herb and Robo,
Up till now, my work flow was identical to yours for most things especially recording vocals. Recently I've been dubbing some guitar colouring (yes I'm Canadian, and yes colour has a U in that word up here) and short solos. My skill level on those thin slippery high strings (I'm a bass player) is limitted and new, so if I get a piece of a take that I like, chances are I couldn't do it again if I tried!!!

Thanks for all the good ideas!!!

If you have MC4 or 5 you should be eligible to cross grade for a reduced rate to X1e which allows that.

The crossgrade offer expires at the end of August.
