Well it's quite clear from some of the responses here that some of us are simply seen as Whining Limeys. So I sugest a change of tack. I will stop complaining that UK/Euro customers are being ripped off. I have NEVER said that £89 is not good value, I've only complained that the rest of the world only pays $99. The alternative tack? Oh yeah, nearly forgot... The rest of the world should pay $145 (the equivalent of £89) So bring it on....

I'm a limey, and I really don't care much what it costs elsewhere. Or rather, yeah, it's kind of lame, but it;'s a bit like getting angry about the colour of the sky; it is what it is. I choose to look at it another way, which is this: have Sonar upgrades generally been worth the money, to me? To which the answer would have to be yes. I spend more on train journeys I don't want to make every month than I do on Sonar in a year. It might be cheaper elsewhere, but I don't live elsewhere, so it's kind of moot.

It's also worth remembering that $99 is not in real terms the same amount of money everywhere in the world. For a lot of potential customers around the world, it's a shedload of money. I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the world where all this mind boggling stuff is basically cheap in relation to average incomes. I'm not going to burst into tears over a price difference that amounts to a middling night in the pub.

This is an old story and is not exclusive to Cakewalk. Look up "Cubase 5" on Amazon.com. $469.99. Now look up "Cubase 5" on Amazon.de. EUR 594.30. Granted, the Amazon.de price includes VAT, but even if the VAT was 20%, the German price would be higher than the U.S. price by the same proportion at Sonar.

Just in case you enjoy reading these complaint sessions have a look at some previous years for a refresher course. http://forum.cakewalk.com...pgrade+8.5&mpage=1 http://forum.cakewalk.com...p;high=eur+upgrade+8.5 http://forum.cakewalk.com...high=price+upgrade+8.5 You should all be happy. Last year everybody from Europe felt they should only have to pay 99 euro and this year it is only 89 euro. It kind of looks as if you got what everybody was asking for last year. LOL. I'm not sure why this seems like such a difficult problem to understand. When I buy software from Germany (going to Canada) I pay an elevated price and then additional customs and taxes via a broker when it lands in usually amounting to about 30-35%. I look at it as if that is the product I want, that is what it will cost me. I could care less what someone living in Liepzig has to pay for it.

I don't think you're reading the same web site as everyone else Lorney. It's 89 UKP, 99 Euro. Last year it was 89 UKP, 99 Euro BUT THAT = 145 USD (give or take a cent) We're not even complaining that it's cheaper in the US, we're complaining that the whole world pays $99 except for UK/Euro who pay $145. All we're asking, and all we asked last year, is WHY?

The most likely explanation is that there is a distribution agreement in place for the European market. In order for the dealers to be able to make a profit they can not be undersold by the manufacturer/developer or no one would carry their product. The dealers are subject to all the import rules and vat taxes that are in place(at the wishes of the people who elected their politicians to protect their economies) with in their countries/trading areas. Any company that would undersell its own distribution network would no longer have a distribution network.

A "silly" question: when we pay 99€ on the cakewalk store for a download version, does cakewalk pay any vat and custom fees to the EU, or do they simply keep the difference in their pocket? The problem for me is that local dealer don't often offer all the upgrade paths, they usually sell the full version.

Dude, This is NOT a Cake phenomenon. Haven't you noticed that the price of most technology products from US-based companies are around the same nominal $ price as nominal £ price?! Take DELL or HP Computers... a $500 laptop will be listed as £500 in the UK retail market. N'est pas ? LOL ;-) Oh but wait, that isn't fair... blah, blah, blah. The cost of doing business outside the US is higher due to governmental and cultural issues. Until that changes, the cost will get passed along to your consumers.
Microsoft Surface Book w/ Surface dock, dual 24-inch HD displays, Sonar Platinum, THD 4, GuitarRig, Amplitube, (Kontakt4), Garritan PO, Trillian Bass 1.3, Roland Octa-Capture, Waves Gold & various Waves, PSP and T-Racks plugins.KRK Rokit6, Lefty Guitars & Bass, racks/pedals galore and many other fun things.

Some of it is the cost of doing business. Some of it, if everyone's being honest, is the fact that you can cynically get away with it. In this sense, the people complaining have a point.

This is NOT a general way of business. For example I recently bought an izotope plugin, I was able to buy in USD$ without any problem. Some companies protect completely the european distributors market, some offer direct buy opportunity on internet at the same price that for us citizens.

It's all very well saying Cakewalk are protecting their distribution network. The distribution network however does not offer downloads. When purchasing a download from the Cakewalk store, the distributer is not involved. How is it justified that Cakewalk charge the inflated price that a distributer charges? Cakewalk will say it is to reflect sales taxes and the like in the customer's region but will not provide details of the taxes charged nor details of their account with the EU tax authorities. Until they do then we can only summise that this is a lie and that the price is fixed at a level to discourage people in the EU from using the web store and encourage them to purchase through their local distributor. Please Cakewalk - allow us European/UK customers to pay the same price as the rest of the world and account for our own taxes and import duties to our local authorities. Many other US businesses allow this and still manage to maintain distribution networks.

When purchasing a download from the Cakewalk store, the distributer is not involved. No, but significantly cheaper downloads would undermine the physical distribution network, and physical distributors would get mighty pissed about it. It's the same reason games aren't generally cheaper on Steam (in fact, often more expensive). Myself, I long for the day when software is by default download only, and this issue is pretty much moot.

I have previously requested but never been given them. I can only draw the conclusion that they are not EU VAT registered and that they are spinning a yarn to all those who question their pricing policies. Do cakewalk provide a legitimate VAT invoice with their downloads ( including VAT reg details and VAT amount charged) ? I have never bought a download from Cakewalk.com, I would like to, perhaps but I suspect I would not receive a VAT invoice so have not, so cannot say for sure but I suspect not.

John T but significantly cheaper downloads would undermine the physical distribution network, and physical distributors would get mighty pissed about it. As you are well aware the physical media is charged extra by Cakewalk, we're only talking about the license upgrade price here. Whether I choose to pay extra for a set of disks or make use of the free download is up to me, I just don't expect to be discriminated against simply because I was born in the UK. If every country had a different price based on postage to that country, local taxes, etc. then fair enough. If one or a few countries had cheaper prices in attempt to gain market share in that country, GREAT FOR THEM. To single out one market and make it 40% more expensive than the rest of the world is... I can't say for fear of being banned, but you know what I'm thinking... And before anyone starts on the old "import taxes and VAT" excuse again, IT DOESN'T APPLY.

Perhaps if Cakewalk were to offer an honest and satisfactory explanation then there'd be no need for this thread. We get tired of posting it every year. We get tired of feeling discriminated against every year. Before you say that we don't have to buy the upgrade may I just say that I didn't for 3 years.......not solely because of the inflated pricing in the UK but at least partly. If cakewalk offered a satisfactory explanaion and complied with VAT regulations then there'd be no need for this thread.
