Loop Construction in Music Creator 5

I am trying to use the loop construction feature in Music Creator 5 but all the options look grayed out and I can't even select the section of the clip that I want to loop. All I want to do is select sections from songs and make loops out them and save them as wave files. When I click the "enable looping" icon it gives me a "value out of range" error message, and I am unable to use the selection tool to select anything. What's going on? Do I have to upgrade to Sonar to use this feature? Please help.

do you have a softsynth assigned as playback in the loop explorer window?

I don't think so. Is that under the audio preview bus options?

It shows my speakers as the playback device.

I'm using version 5.0.4. Could there be a compatability issue with Windows 7?

no there shouldn't be a compatibility issue.

and your speakers can't be the output for MIDI.  your soundcard could be if you're using a soundblaster card, but not speakers.

the loop explorer has 3 panes, the PREVIEW SYNTH, FOLDERS and FILE INFO
the far left is the PREVIEW SYNTH
if you don't have anything listed there, then you don't have a synth output for your MIDI to output to for sound.  (MIDI is data ONLY, not sound).

if youdon't have anything in the PREVIEW SYNTH pane, then click on the icon just to the right of the pull down for the preview bus which, when you hover the mouse over it, it says "INSERT SOFTSYNTH"
    then choose SOFTYNTHS>TTS-1
    that should get you going.

you should also work thru the tutorials in the help files - they're very helpful with MIDI and softsynts.

Are you trying to create loops from an audio track?
If so, the selected area can have a maximum of 256 beats (ie: 64 measures in 4/4 time). If the selected track or section is longer, you will get the "Value out of range" message.
Please give us more detailed info on what you are working with.

"loop construction" - you're probably right, Bob - I think I misread the original post.  I was thinking loop explorer for some reason.

    It happens.
I don't think a lot of people delve into the loop construction tool, so it's easy to overlook.
It is very powerful, but a bit tricky to use.
I don't use it a lot, but there are times when it's just what the doctor ordered.

I've never used it myself, but I have opened it a couple of times to see what it was about or help someone.

I tried the preview synth thing. Still no luck. The funny thing is that when I select a small section of the song in the track view, the section isn't selected in the loop construction view. MC apparently counts all the beats in the whole song and tells me it is out of range when I hit the "enable looping" button. Thanks for the help. I think can probably still create loops without the loop constuction feature.

The only other thing I can think of is that the loop constuction is not working because I don't have any MIDI devices hooked up to it right now. Just a wild guess, but I can't test that theory right now because my TASCAM USB-122 is a piece of crap and won't install on my new Windows 7 machine.

ok - but we have to figure out what you're trying to do exactly.  if you're actually trying to work with LOOP CONSTRUCTION then that doesn't have anything to do with MIDI at all (and btw - not having a MIDI device connected will not stop you from doing anything except recording MIDI - you can even input MIDI with the mouse - the message that pops up stating that you have no midi devices can be ignored it won't stop you from working).

so tell us exactly what you're trying to do and how you're trying to do it before we can get a grasp on how to help.
