Loop/Sample storage

I noticed on Mr. Bandsaw's post below that people put all their loops (Hardgrove, etc) on a separate drive? I rarely use loops in Platinum, so should I cut these from my C:Drive and paste them all on my external hard drive (in the event I need them)? Will this significantly help my system run smoother since they're such memory hogs?

Thanks. And I also wanted to thank everyone on this board who actually takes the time out of their lives to help people. It's very refreshing to see and is greatly appreciated! This forum is a wonderful resource with very cool people!

I use C: drive for programs, a big honkin' drive for samples, and another drive for projects.

    Cool! I can do that.

So what I should've done, was installed the loops from Command Center onto my external drive from the get-go? Same goes for other stuff I don't use. Or just don't install it at all.

    Thanks for the reply.

Files on disk, no matter what the size, aren't going to have an effect on how fast or smoothly programs run. For the most part, just store things wherever you want. However, files on an external hard disk are somewhat slower to read and access than files on a local hard disk, so storing infrequently used loops on an external disk frees up space on your faster, internal ones. Don't do that for small one-shot samples however, because many samplers will stream them off disk during playback - and if your disk is a slow external one, you may encounter glitches. (Also, accessing USB devices - including hard disks - is quite CPU intensive, so you don't want to be doing that during playback if it's practical to avoid it.)
